I have a 10+ yo HP ENVY i7-4700MQ laptop with a network adapter card that I believe to be failing because it fails to 'see' the 5GHz network broadcast by my router. Every other wifi device in the house including multiple iPads and iPhones and smart TVs see both wifi networks, as do a couple of other Windows laptops. I've tried to locate a replacement card, but the ones I've found do not fit the machine. The existing (failing) card has 2 wires connected to the adapter card. I cannot find another like it. I cannot find information that better describes the network adapter card for this machine. If anyone has a link that might reveal that info I'd be grateful for the information.

The card itself has this information: U98H113 and CT:GDFYB02VM5pF0. I'd post pics of the card but I cannot get Roboform to accept my credentials on this new laptop despite it accepting them on the old HP; therefore I cannot log into IMGUR to post pics. If I get that issue resolved I'll post pics.

Again, if anyone knows where I can find a diagram explaining the components and their locations for this old HP, I'd be grateful for a link.

USAFRet had a good idea. MAYBE your router is configured to use ONLY the 5 GHz band, and your old card can not do that. IF you simply re-configure the router to use BOTH bands (that is a normal way for it to operate), that might solve the problem.

Thanks for the response, Gentlemen.

I ordered that adapter, COLGeek. Thanks. My searches didn't turn it up, or I wasn't paying close enough attention to details.

@Paperdoc: my router transmits on both bands as evidenced by the fact that multiple ipads, iphones, and other devices 'see' both 2.4 and 5GHz networks. In fact, both networks have worked on this laptop in the past.

FWIW: I should receive a T-Mobile cellular wifi modem/router next week that I will trial to see if it will effectively replace my cable connected equipment. I've had it with Astound communications and have not had good service from either Spectrum or AT&T (my only other choices for cable-based ISP service); so I'm looking forward to finding out about cellular service. In any case, I want to replace the old network adapter card.

Thanks, again, for the help!

If you have the exact model of your laptop it should be really easy to find a replacement wifi adapter. HP is also pretty good about having service and maintenance manuals on their website (again need the exact model to point you in the right direction). Looks like most of the WIFI cards of that era should have a 6 digit number with a dash then 3 more digits which is the part number HP uses to identify their devices.

That being said a USB adapter should work fine though personally I'd rather have a working card inside the laptop.

UPDATE:

Got a replacement network adapter card from Amazon and installed it today. I can now 'see' both wifi networks, but even on the 5GHz network I'm getting less than 50 Mbps download speed on the old HP ENVY (10+yo). Sitting right beside it the new Dell Inspiron 5130 is clocking just under 200 Mbps. Both tests were run with browser pointed to fast.com.

I'm currently going thru and running diags from those installed by HP on my system. No results to report yet. Are there any diagnostics from other sources I can run?

All diagnostic tests run and passed. I'm beginning to think that its a problem with my router, but I cannot explain why it works with all other devices. I'm also mystified by the fact that I cannot log into the router's firmware. It accepts my login credentials but never delivers any pages to the browser.

Yesterday. I've been loathe to reset it because if it bricks, the wife won't be able to watch TV or YT channels.

I am supposed to receive a T-Mobile device today (modem/router?) that will use a cellular link and will displace my router. When I have that working, I'll reset my router and try again. I wanted to log into the router firmware to investigate changing service frequencies (channels) to see what effect that might have. If the problem persists using the T-Mobile service, I can only conclude that the problem is with this old laptop; although I can't log into the router firmware from any platform including the new Dell Inspiron.

I've reset the router. I can now see the firmware pages on my browser; however, download speed still sucks. I'm getting anywhere from 40 to 65 Mbps down on a service that claims to deliver 300 Mbps. I'm aware that the 300 Mbps is selling apples, not eating apples (to quote an old IBM salesman), but even so I should be getting closer to half the rated speed, shouldn't I?

speedtest.net.

What does that report?

Thank you, Gentlemen.

I reset the router yet again then ran speedtest.net. I'm amazed that the results changed. I'm not getting between 140 - 145 Mbps down and 30 -35 up on the astound communications ISP service.

I installed T-Mobile cellular wifi this week because I became frustrated and extremely disappointed with astound's help desk. The cellular wifi is easily 20-25% faster but up and down. I will be dropping astound like a hot rock.

It seems the problem using astound wifi might have been in the Linksys router. Resetting it solved the problem but I'm still dropping astound.

Cannot thank you enough for helping me through this!
