Need solid CPU that'll last years without upgrade

So I'm helping a friend out and I was wondering, if I wanted to make a PC that can run everything today maxed out and just needs a better GPU for the future (in about 3-4 years), what would I do?

Aside from the obvious (case, fans, PSU, HD etc), I am interested in these components.

I would guess 12GB DDR3 1600 / 1866 RAM and a GTX 770.. He wants an Nvidia.

But I'm stuck on the CPU. Will an i5 4670 last years without upgrade? Keep in mind this is 6+ years and the only thing upgraded would be GPU once. Or should I get an i7? There is currenty €280,- reserved just for the CPU.

This will be used for 1920*1080 gaming. Help me out? =D

there is no way to know what 6+ years in the future will be for gaming.

a 4770k should be what you are looking for.hyperthreading is not used in games but you never know what hapens in the future.you dont need more than 1600 mhz ram if you are not overclocking.more whoud be useless the cpu can only run at 1600 mhz without overclock.go for low cache latency refered as cl like cl9 stick with cl9 1600 lower cl faster ram.

if the pc is for gaming get the 4670K,16gigs of 1866mhz memory and the gtx780ti....that should be enough for gaming at least for 3-4years at 1080p

Assuming said friend would still be 1920*1080 or perhaps 2560*1600 gaming, no oculus rift or anything.

Wouldn't need K because said friend doesnt know how to OC and isn't interested in it either. So 4770? And wouldn't hyperthreading be more support in the future or is that a pointless thing regarding games?

"ht" have been in pc for a long long time, but still there are no games that really benefit from it.....so i guess,it doesn't really matter

as for oc....most modern boards do support auto oc...so even a novice can oc his/her processor

there is no way you friend can use any processor for 6+ years without oc ing

Possibly go for a FX8350 for long term future support. More programs are shifting to multithreading.

However, the bit about most boards supporting overclocking is kind of wrong. On an Intel platform, you can't do much without a Z-series board.

Thinking that anything below an i7-3930K will last 6+ years in the future is equivalent to dreaming. I'd recommend getting an i7-4960X if you want to be sure that it'll be fully maxing out all the games in 2020. The GTX 770 is immediately out of the list if we are talking for 6+ years, I'd say get a HD 7990 now and after around 3 years buy the best GPU on the market again. I'd say get 32 GB of RAM, or at least 24 GB.. 12 ain't simply gonna do it for so long, since he'll only upgrade the GPU once. Either he should spend an insane amount of money or simply forget for a system lasting till 2020 on the very top.

In that case, get at least an i7-2700K, i7-3770K or an i7-4770K. For a GPU, I still wouldn't recommend the GTX 770, but a R9 290X and at least 16 GB RAM, if he'll still be gaming in 2020 with that rig. Don't forget to get a fast SSD as well. I think those specs gotta last him till 2020 on medium, if he upgrades to a faster card in 3 years or adds another R9 290X to the current one in which case you'll need to choose a good motherboard for Crossfire.

16 GB for gaming is a complete waste even in 3-4 years since modern video cards start at 2GB on board memory and will be starting at 3GB of faster RAM in 3-4 years

The guy said 6+ years, and trust me, in 2020, which is exactly 6+ years from now, 16 GB RAM will not be a waste at all.

Well, treat it in whichever way you like, but when 2020 comes, you'll see that people with 8 or 12 GB RAM ain't simply gonna make it in the gaming sector anymore. One of the most important components for gaming is the Random Access Memory. You may have an i7-4960X, HD 7990, but only 2 GB of RAM and won't be able to run any modern game normally, even on medium. My point will prove itself on its own with time.

I agree with him. Some new games are starting to recommend 8gb now. So it is totally feasible to assume in 6 years that 16gb could be the norm. Games are about to start using 64 bit textures as well. How long ago was it when 2gb was acceptable? Around 6 years ago on a 32 bit system. 4gb/8gb got a little more popular when 64 bit windows started taking off. 6 years is a long ways off to assume tech/software won't advance that far IMO.

Considering some games these days already FORCE you to have atleast 6GB. i think 8 will not be enough for the next 6 years. but i do think 8 will be enough for the first few years to come.

And i really mean FORCE... since you can't even start the game if you don't have atleast 6GB.

I can't believe the number of people recommending a quad core CPU for a 4-6 year future proof build. You are the same ones who told them 2 years ago that the I3 was all you need to game. The minimum should be 8 cores/threads. Also,with ram when I was told all I needed was 4GB ram I got 8 GB. Strange that that is the norm now. But now I build with 16 GB (we'll see in a couple of years how that works out). No one knows what the future of gaming will be but I believe it will be more than what some here believe. Build the best you can (INTEL or AMD) and hope you guessed wisely.

To be as future proof as possible I would go for a socket 2011 board and a 6 core(12 threads) i7 4930k, but its not cheap.
