Need some advice for a New Gaming Rig

Hello everyone,

I've been working on a gaming rig for myself recently, and by doing research & looking up reviews, this is what i came up with. As this is my first time building a pc myself, would really love to hear some experienced users advice on this.

CPU: Intel Core I5 4690K
MOBO: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5, MSI Z97X Gaming 5 or Gaming 7
RAM: GSkill RIpjawsX XL 8GB DDR3 2133mhz, Kingston Hyper-X 1866mhz 8GB
HDD: WD 1TB Caviar Black
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD
PSU: Seasonic S12 II 620W PSU, Will 620W be enough for this build of mine for now? What about if I were to add in another GTX970 in the future?
Chasis: Corsair Obsidian 750D
GPU: Gigabyte N970 G1 Gaming, MSI GTX970 4G D5 Twin Frozr V
Cooler: Corsair H100i Liquid, CM Seidon 240M

Based on what i came up with, there's also some multiple choices between brands that i am just unable to decide on. Those in Bold are actually my first option and blue are the alternatives that i'm considering, but would always listen to some expert/experienced advice as my building knowledge are still quite shallow.

Everything looks good, as for motherboard any of us 3 will be fine the gaming 7 will be more expensive but if it's in your budget is the best of the 3. I'd stick with the G.Skill ram their product is great quality/price. As for the PSU if you're hoping to add a 2nd 970 for SLI I'd recommend a 750W EVGA G2. My personal preference for the GPU is the MSI Twin Frozr (based on looks mostly).

Everything is well balanced. Seasonic 620W is a perfect match for it and has plenty of available power. Both Gigabyte and MSi make good GTX 970s, it comes down to brand preference in the end. I've had great experience with an MSI motherboard so its a good alternative choice.

If you were to add another 970 in the future I'd go with a 750W or 850W PSU.

The Gigabyte 970 overclocks better than the MSI one but you can get the cheaper WF3OC one instead of the G1 and you get the same cooler and card just no back plate and the base clock and boost clock are lower, all accounts on OCing them have shown that they both perform the same so I think the G1 is just a rip off. But that's me.

I am pretty new to building PCs buthave ruffly the same setup except I do not have a ssd for boot up and I have a 2G GPU instead of a 4G. My biggest regret is the 2G GPU so your looking solid also i have a 550 W power supply, which is a upgrade bottleneck. so the 620 W is a good choice.

620W would still be too low for SLI 970's he'll need 750-850W

Awesome info guys. Thanks for all the quick replies too. A few minor questions thou,

I'm most probably intending to OC this rig to get the most of it. Therefore i might go with the suggested options above. I've also read-up on some info about OC-ing will consume more power. If that's the case would the 620 be too low for the rig to run?

How does windows 8.1 work for gaming nowadays? Or would a win 7 still be the better option?

Would the 8gb ram be enough? I understand that 16gb would definitely be better if price is not a factor, but as the current latest games scales to, would it actually require up to 16gb?

Currently 8 Gig is the sweet spot for RAM, putting in more gives no really noticeable performance increase in games, though it has other benefits in other tasks. Yes OCing will cause the components to Draw more power, but the CPU and GPU are both very efficient and a good quality 620W should be enough for OCing. As others have said if you want to go SLi however you are going to want a bigger PSU. Windows 8.1 does have a very slight advantage in gaming but you are going to be trading off that tiny performance increase for the 8.1 UI which some people really hate, though now that windows 7 is in extended support and will only be receiving security updates and will only do so for another 5ish years the better bet might be to get windows 8.
