Right, I recently found out that the copy of Windows 7 I bought a while ago is an MSDN and after I did a reinstall recently I have been unable to reactivate it as it has been blocked by Microsoft.
It looks as though I will get my money back but right now the price I paid is a way off the price of a new retail copy so I'm still gonna take a hit.
I've been looking into OEM copies and this seems more desirable for me.
The question I have is will I be able to install the OEM copy over my current copy.
What complicates this slightly is that I am not able it seems to boot my PC from a disc. I designate the CD drive to be what to boot from in BIOS but it just continues to boot the copy on my PC's drive.
I have two other options if using an OEM copy that I am wondering if someone can tell me will work before I buy or if OEM copies MUST be installed on a clean (empty) system.
I could run the installation from within Windows and install the new OEM disc, I wont be able to delete the original partition and the original copy because it doesn't allow partition management doing it from the disc within windows like this, but there is enough space to facilitate a new OS and a Windows (old) folder that I can delete once the new copy is installed.
Or I could go to advanced recovery and choose to reinstall from the original disc and use the OEM version to do this.
But can I?
Will the OEM version work in this way as a retail copy does?
I've never used an OEM copy and don't know if it has some limitations like this.
Or finally, would I be able to get an upgrade copy and upgrade to it even though I was already using a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. Ie upgrading to a copy of Win 7 from a copy of Win 7?
Or say for example upgrading with a Win 7 Ultimate disc (or upgrade key used within windows anytime upgrade) on the system that currently has an unactivated copy of Home Premium?
Would be grateful if somebody could advise me on my best option in my situation.
Thanks.
