Hi guys, my motherboard went out on me and I"m looking for a replacement for it. I don't want to rely on websites that list "the five best.." etc...as they are most likely paid by the boards they list. So I thought I'd come here and ask you fine folks. Thanks very much for any help at all.

(Be sure to check when looking for a motherboard that any of the models shown below are either 990fx, 990 or 970 chipsets. Other AM3/AM3+ chipsets are not desirable especially for any of the FX8 core CPUs and some Intel vs AMD motherboards might share a similar name while having distinctly incompatible sockets or chipsets.

A "Z170" Extreme6 for example (Z170 being the chipset, and being an Intel chipset), is not going to work with your AMD FX processor, so, in this example, you want to look for the "990/990fx" Extreme6.)

The bottom line though is that ANY of these still available NEW, out there, are going to be grossly expensive and any used board you might find will probably already have as many miles on it as your old board did and either be in the same shape or not far off from it by now, all these years later. These boards are certainly not, and haven't been for some time, still in production.

Personally, my advice is move on. The cost isn't justified for a 9 year old system that had poor performance even when it was new.

Anything out there right now, including lowly i3 or Ryzen 3 parts from the last couple of generations, will grossly outperform any, even highly overclocked, FX CPU and platform.

Why would you waste money on an FX 8320 compatible motherboard. It will be out performed by an i3 ...

You are going to have to look to Ebay, most likely to find anything that will work. Frankly, I would recommend spending a bit more, if you can, and get something a bit more modern/faster. If that is not doable, then I would do something more like this.

E3 1231v3, for $49

H97 Pro4 for $83

For roughly $162, you get a far better combination.

For $250 ish, you can get a more modern rig, with a few upgrade options.
