HITACHI Deskstar 7K500 HDS725050KLA360 500GB $150
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB $149
Faster Windows Loading and almost 7x the storage space for about the same price.
Windows loading times dont mean much if you only load Windows once or twice a month like I do.

Where it probably matters most there is usually a very small difference - a few seconds - one you wont notice unless you're moving from an older, slower hard drive in the same PC.

Ok, Raptors are faster but there are better ways spend the $$$
difference between a Raptor & 2nd hard drive vs one modern fast HD. Like getting factory OC 640MB version
of the 8800GTS!

OK, if there's a flame war I want in :)

OP: if you get a WD7500AAKS you won't be sorry. It's got 750 GB of space and it's very fast.

Also, you can always add a Raptor later, if you still want. Your first priority is to get the best video card you can afford first, and one disk. You can easily add a second disk later, but it's not that easy to upgrade the video card. For example 8800 GTX + a 250 GB disk is better than 8800 GTS 320 + Raptor + 250 GB disk. Even if it's not better, you can just add the Raptor later when you've got another $200 saved, and in the end you do have a better machine this way.

If your going to add a benchmark, you might as well include them all like access times. Hitachi makes a great HD though, if I needed a second HD that Hitachi would be my first choice. The responsiveness from the Raptor compared to my old Maxtor 80GB was just so dramatic, thats why I recommend it to others.
