I purchased a computer and it came with this ram, but only 1 8GB stick

I want to possible buy more to get 16GB but they only sell it in a set. I am wondering if it's totally safe to buy another stick of ram and if so what should I look for, thanks.

I was told if I buy a 2nd stick it might not work even if it's identical, I am scared to waste my money as I am not rich, looking for expert advice.

16gb is recommended for gaming, as for what to do depends on your budget and system. For Intel you might be able to get away with a identical stick but if your using AMD then your best bet is to sell that stick and buy a 2x8gb kit @3000/3200mhz as AMD Ryzen performs much better with fast memory in dual channel and doesn't have the best compatibility especially mixing untested sticks (together).

That being said if your budget is tight and a 2x8gb kit is out of reach then 8gb is fine. I still have a few friends that are using 4gb although the performance isn't great (50+- FPS in games such as the Division/Destiny 2/Tera).
