I have a cable modem and router upstairs and the tech has run an Ethernet cable downstairs for me . I want to set up the wifi downstairs because I have a limited wifi signal downstairs. Wife's computer work from home is hard wired upstairs. What do I need to put a wifi modem down here?

I agree with @Scottray. You only have one ethernet cable upstairs-to-downstairs and your REQUIRE wired connectivity upstairs. You have to leave your primary router where it is. That means you need a second WIFI source. An access point or a router acting as an access point is the answer. If you have an old WIFI router, there is a sticky on the steps necessary to convert -- http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/36406-43-convert-wireless-router-wireless-access-point

You got it. Note that you'll need to configure the accesspoint/router first. Follow the instructions in the manual or online. It will tell you how to set it as an access point, give it an SSID name and wifi password. Then, connect the access point/router downstairs to any open LAN port on your upstairs router using an ethernet cable. Then you'll have as good of wifi signal downstairs, as you do upstairs.
