Hello,
I was looking for installing the latest version of Paint.NET 4.1.1 and I needed to install NET Framework 4.7.2 becasue it's required for the program to run.

I had already installed NET Framework 4.5.x version and I unistalled it from the Programs and Features list, and then ran the cleanup_tool, and also CCLeaner and GlarySoft Utilities as I usually do (I don't use such tools so often, when I only need to clear and clean old files, temps, etc...) . I downloaded then the NET Framework 4.7.2 dev pack for offline installation. I also updated the OS to Windows 7 SP1 before, because it was requested too.

NET Framework always worked, I use software tools NET based.

During the installation process an error message appeared (below log file).

The same error occurs every time I try to install any other NET Framework versions (4.5.2 , 4.6.1 , 4.6.2 , 4.7.2 ).

Windows Update shows an update for NET Framework 4.7.2 for Win7 SP1 , but can't be installed, an error occured.

I tried the most common solutions found on the net, but with no results:

-web installer / stand alone pack for installation
-installing it with Paint.NET installation process
-cleanup_tool (1.0 up to 4.7.2)
-Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool (3.5 up to 4.6.1 )

I have no Anti Virus or Fire Wall programs installed.

I think that the problem is about MSI or Windows Installer, but I have no idea. That error seems to be very common, but can't find a way to solve it.

check which version you have installed

On the Start menu, choose Run.
In the Open box, enter regedit.exe.
You must have administrative credentials to run regedit.exe.
In the Registry Editor, open the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v4\Full
Note that the path to the Full subkey includes the subkey Net Framework rather than .NET Framework

leave them alone! i think you did yourself in with uninstallation tools and ccleaner, which is horrible and destroys systems.

just install 4.7.2 with Admin privileges. that should work and if it asks to reboot or reboots, let it.

I know that I failed unistalling the previous verisions, I'm not here to read sterile answers from users. I just want to know if there is a way to repair that error.

you should not uninstall the old versions. you have no idea what depends on them! learn from this, read my other posts.

also, do NOT under any circumstances use non microsoft uninstallers, OR that stupid volatile ccleaner. learn the lesson. if it's working, why destroy it unless you are sucking for a clean install of the OS.. so if .net is failing you probably need to restore to an earlier point or do a clean install of windows.

read it or don't read it. i speak the truth from experience. take heed.

I know that I tragically broke it out, that's why I'm here searching for a solution, if possible.

that log does not indicate that. he's on 7 and win 10 does come with built in 4.7

I think he, by trying to remove .net 4.5.x did some damage to the os fileset. I bet it warned him not to uninstall it, but then he used weird uninstallers... just not the right way to handle any windows installation. 3rd party tools are terrible, all of them. i deal with this stuff alot. i guarantee it's the glary tools and ccleaner... lol I have much and intimate knowledge of how installers work, or should work.

I had already tried both web installer and offline installer for a new NET Framework installation (4.4.2 , 4.6.1 , 4.6.2 and 4.7.2 ), and all the cases resulted in the same error. But, this time I tried again, a different error message appeared.

The link below is the information link showed in the window log:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/troubleshoot-blocked-installations-and-uninstallations

As I already did, from the NET Framework registry keys list, the only NET F versions installed are:
-v2.0.50727
-v3.0
-v3.5

I unistalled it as a normal program in the Programs and Features section, not from CCleaner panel or using other tools. I did the same in the past and I reinstalled the NET Framework without any issues (up 4.5.x version, that's the first time I install a new version than 4.x or 4.5), but this time I got that error.

That's the error message:

"Setup cannot continue because a previous installation requires your computer to be restarted. Please restart your computer and rerun Setup."

I restarted the computer, and then tried again, but nothing changed, the same error occured.

The first thing I tried was installing all the old updates I have never installed, I sincerely never kept the system updated (that's why Paint.NET warned me to install the Win7 SP1 update), and tried to install NET Framework (any version) every time I downloaded new updates, but with no results. I had never had any unusual issues or errors before. I'll try reinstalling a new fresh copy of Win7 again, Win10 doesn't suit my needs, and my computer is a very old machine (triple core Intel CPU and 9000 Nvidia series GPU).

If there were something else to try for a solution, keep me updated! Thank you anyway for your efforts!
