Hello internet
I have a cable modem that has a coax line and ethernet output but no wifi, just cable
I have bought this Netgear DGN1000 adsl combo router from blackmarket (probably rejected stuff because it's hella cheap), which doesn't have coax cable, but I only want to use it as a wifi router, I have tried it but alas it only works for the first 10 minutes until the DNS has failed to connect, heck I can't even get into 192.168.0.1 or any other modem related browser url, I also noticed from the wireless I can get into 192.168.0.1 from my phone and it seemed to not be connected the internet, only the router
Also somehow Steam works, haven't tried online games yet
Should I just buy a Balun coax to adsl or buy a standalone router?

Solution
You are going to have to buy another router. The only way to use the "router" function is to go from a wan port to a lan port. The WAN port on that device will only hook to a DSL phone line which you do not have.
It depends if the device you call a modem is just a modem or if it is a modem and router. If it has only 1 ethernet port they tend to be just modems.

If it is a router you can use your netgear as a AP to just add wireless support.

If the modem does not have a router you can not use the device you have. You can not use any form of simple adapter to covert coax to ethernet or adsl. That is what a modem is actually doing and they would not use a fancy box with electronics if you could just connect some simple wires.

My modem is a cisco one, It only has one ethernet cable, as stated above I tried to connect it to the Netgear and consulted manual for over 2 hours but still has no avail, My question is can I use it and how to use it as a standalone wireless router, or should I buy another one?
