Network Cable Unplugged Cycling after New Router

My computer is an HP tower about 3 years old. Used a Surfboard modem/router for a few years. Everything works fine. I seem to remember when I set up the first router there was conflict between wifi and ethernet, but disabling wifi fixed the problem of internet dropping every few seconds.

Just got a new modem (Arris Surfboard SB6190) and a Nighthawk Router R7000P. From the start internet connection is cycling on and off. Keeps saying Ethernet cable is unplugged. Cycles right back to working, then goes out for a few seconds. Happens regularly at least once a minute, sometimes after only seconds.

Note, everything else on the wifi network works fine. Phone, Alexa, Nest Cams, Cloud Cam, Cox cameras, Philips Huemote Bridge (hub plugged in, bulbs connect via wifi), laptops, etc.

I have tried:
new ethernet cable. Same thing happens
Change port in router. Same thing happens
Plug directly in to modem. Works fine. (So I don't think it's the cable or my machine. Runs speeds up to 70Mbp through Modem. That's above my Cox subscription "max" of 50Mbps, so seems my computer can keep up with the speed)
Disable wifi. Same problem.
Leave wifi on but prioritize ethernet. Same problem but does bounce to wifi when the ethernet goes out. Still causes lags and error screens while browsing though.
Using just Wifi sometimes works but often leaves me "connected no internet." Regardless, speed too slow. Don't want to run off wifi.
Update driver. Same problem.
Turned off Windows firewall. Didn't help.
Uninstall and reinstall Realtek PCIe FE Family. Same problem.
Change ISP and DNS (Netgear tech walked me though.) Didn't help.
Uninstalled VPN. Didn't help.
Set Duplex to 100Mb Full - same problem
Set Duplex to 1000MB Half - same problem
Set Duplex to 10Mb Full - seems to fix it, but speed is tapped out at 10Mb and that's not acceptable solution.

I've spent 4 hours on the phone with Netgear tech and over 10 hours on Google trying everything I can find suggested short of installing a new ethernet port/card. Surely there has to be a fix I'm missing?! HELP!! I use this computer for work and have not been able to work from home for the last 2 weeks.

Thank you for extensive description ... Parts of your description make me think the issue is with the router ... other parts make me think it is the cable. So, just to verify, when you tried a new cable, was it the cable from the computer to the Nighthawk? Is that cable the only thing between the computer and the Nighthawk (do you have a wall plug or powerline networking or is the Nighthawk sitting a couple feet away from the computer)?

The Duplex setting ... you normally leave it on "Auto Negotiate" and were changing it just to test? The fact that it works at 10Mb screams a cable problem, but it also could be physical fault in the Nighthawk. Most Ethernet devices has LED lights at the ports. They indicate speed and activity. If you see fast blinking, that is normal, but if the lights come one for a bit and then go dark for a bit, then we could be looking at a physical fault.

Temporary workaround (so you can work from home until this gets figured out) ... I assume the Surfboard has multiple LAN ports. Plug the Nighthawk into LAN 1 and use it for WiFi. Plug the computer into LAN 2. Only issue would be the computer can't talk to your WiFi devices in this configuration.

Well, I typed out my answer and hit submit.... and got an error page because it was in an unplugged cycle and lost everything... so let me try again:

Yes, only changed Duplex to address issue. Never heard of it before googling this. I don't know computers. Only what Google tells me.

Would plug into modem directly and forget the problem if it had more than 1 port, but need wifi. I've been working at work this week, but it's not as good as being able to get things done here.

Will look in to router logs and see if I can figure that out and get it posted.

Amber light on router goes blank when in unplugged mode. This happens in whichever port I plug it in to. The Phillips hub and the router for the cox cameras work in any of the Nighthawk ports. The light does not go out for either of those regardless of port. The PC gets blank spells in any port.

Cable was either from router or modem. Can't remember but it was new. It's the first thing I switched. It works when plugged in to the modem though and at high speeds. Just not in the router. Cable goes straight from PC to router. Currently router is right by computer due to current cord length. This will change in the future for better wifi signal but not yet.

Uggg ... too bad about the Surfboard only having 1 port.

When you reinstalled your network drivers, did you get them from the HP website? I ask because you state you installed realtek drivers, but most HP desktops I have worked on have Intel network adapters. If you could share the computer model number I would be happy to look that up.

Do you happen to have a network hub or switch laying around. I'm wondering what happens if you put a hub or switch between the computer and router. (Not worth buying one, just curious).

I don't have a hub or switch to use. But, If I plug it in to the camera router (a cheap netgear) that is plugged in to the Nighthawk it doesn't seem to drop. But it looses 30Mb speed and that router is only temporary until our Cox Homelife expires and we go only to Nest cameras not a combination of Nest and Cox security cameras.

It's an HP Pavillion but I don't remember where to view the rest of the details of what the machine is. That's just what's on the front of the tower. I reinstalled the ethernet driver from the RealTec website. I installed the same driver that was there before I uninstalled it. Microsoft Update doesn't find a better or more updated driver. Actually, the reinstall was automatic when Windows searched for the driver. I had tried to update the driver manually too as there is a 2016 version and Windows update only recognizes and installs a 2015 version. The 2015 is what is currently installed since I did the uninstall/reinstall after manually updating it. Neither thing worked.

Here's the log from this evening. The connection disconnected at 19:43 and 19:42 though I don't know what seconds. Those are the ones I noticed at least since I had the Network Connections window open and it flashes a red X when it goes out.

PS I have also turned off guest newtorks on the router. Neither the 2.4 or the 5 are enabled. That didn't fix anything either. Google said it fixed it for some people.

And unplugging for 1/2 hour didn't do anything either. I'm running out of Google solutions to try! I'm thinking my next step is going to have to be either swapping out for a modem with another out port (but then wouldn't that just be a combo router /modem and I avoided those on purpose for the benefit of a separate modem and router) or getting a different router. I don't think replacing for the same model will work as it doesn't sound like a mechanical problem with the router, but I might try that first as the Nighthawk was highly recommended.

a few things. one make sure the cable modem is connected to the wan port of the router not one of the 4 ethernet ports. same goes for your pc. in the router make sure the default settings for the router and the network are used. on your pc make sure dns and ip info set to auto and not fixed. if the pc keeps dropping go to a local pc store/shop pick up a pci ethernet card. turn off the onboard one and see if the error stops.

From your log, you see how many times DHCP gives an address to 192.168.1.19? Almost every one of those is a mini disconnect. I think you have a physical fault with the ethernet adapter in the HP Pavilion. It could also be a bit of dust or a bent pin, so it's worth removing the plug and inspecting the port. As the last poster suggested, the best solution might be an Ethernet card. They run about $20.

Thanks for the info. I don't actually know what anything in the log means. :) I can follow directions to fix things, but I don't actually know what the info I am coming across is, for the most part.

Re bent pin or physical fault with the adapter in the computer: But what would cause the same cable not to disconnect when plugged in to the modem directly? If it's the ethernet card shouldn't it struggle no matter what it's plugged in to - not just the router? The modem throws out the same speeds as the router, actually a little faster. I can figure out how to install a new ethernet port to at least rule out one more factor, but I can't figure out why it works fine plugged in to other things (old surfboard, new modem) but not this router.

Re WAN port - it has only 1 ethernet port (labeled INTERNET) and 4 numbered ports. The user manual says the 4 are LAN ports. The DNS and IP are currently set to auto (they were changed a while back as part of the troubleshooting Netgear did, but changed back to auto when it didn't work.)

Your right ... it makes no sense, but for some reason one piece of hardware does not like to talk to another. I think the suggestion comes from having no other good ideas. Oddly I have a suspicion that putting a piece of hardware between the two, like a 4-port switch, could fix the problem, but I hate to suggest you spend $20 on something I'm not sure will fix the problem.

Before trying switch try this:

Set up a static IP for your HP Pavillion Tower using its MAC. Use an IP address outside of the available DHCP IP address range.

You could do that two ways via the router:

1) Use the IP address that keeps disconnecting. I.e., 192.168.1.19 but static and reserved.

2) Try another static IP address.

And check the logs to see if there is some change to the continual disconnects per anotherdrew's post and comments.

Overall idea being just to see if the issue can be narrowed down to hardware or perhaps some glitch in firmware or configuration.

Likewise not sure if the above will "fix" anything but no harm in the attempt. And free.

Then try the intervening switch - that make likewise shed some light on the matter.

I will call COX and find out what #s to fill in with the IP address to make it work.

This is the error I usually get when a page won't load:

Your connection was interrupted
A network change was detected.
ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED

sometimes I get a different one. Does that just mean it disconnected while trying to load the page?

@jennk

COX will not and cannot provide you with private IP addresses. There are three ranges of IP addresses used for personal/home networks.

Here is a link to provide more information:

https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-private-ip-address-2625970

Reference the router's User Guide/Manual to access your router and discover the current configuration settings.

You will need admin access to the router to check the configuration settings and make changes; e.g., establish the desired static IP addresses.

But first take a close look at your network and make a list of all connected devices, their IP addresses, and subnet mask.

There should be no duplicate IP addresses.

Reading back: be sure to check the "cheap" netgear router? If it is also assigning IP addresses (DHCP enabled) then there may be conflicts wit the Nighthawk router.

Only one router should be issuing IP addresses.

I don't think the Cox router is interfering (at first I thought maybe it was. I had a Double Net (I think that's right?) problem with my first router/modem combo and thought that it would be an easy fix again. But if I unplug the router from the router, I have the same problems.

Is it related that I also haven't been able to back up my iPhone? It gives me an error that the connection has been reset. That might have to do with my device manager flashing on and off / reloading ever time the ethernet cord connects or disconnects?

"connection has been reset" is the same as you lost the connection. So, the question becomes, is this really just a problem with the HP or is this something going on with multiple devices?

A test: Using another device, download something big (windows iso?). Do you get a successful download or not? If the problem is not limited to the HP as originally thought, it could be you have bum router.

I went to Best Buy and swapped out the Nighthawk for a Linksys (thanks to Best Buy for swapping outside my return period) and... so far, works fine right out of the box. So, no idea what was going on w the other one! Thanks for all the help and suggestions though!
