Network XP to Windows 7 idiot guide

I need to network my PC running XP to my Laptop which has the Windows 7 operating system.
Can anyone help me. If you can explain in the simplest of simple tems it would be most helpful.

Buy a router, plug both devices in via ethernet cable, and they're networked. File sharing is an additional step.
