Just basic networking. Setting up a small network. The nomenclature. Pinging IP addresses. Modems. Routers. Port forwarding. Does this narrow it down. ?

your title is pretty ironic. as the true networking for dummies book is pretty good for the basics and it gets into troubleshooting and other topics as well.

i'd start there. i actually have this book and it has helped me get deeper into networking. its a good start for sure. i used it as a reference when working on the network+ cert. i of course had the proper book but this was easier to read for certain information.
