I see that there's a similar post to this already on the board. That beiong the case, I have two questions that were not addressed yet: 1) Which monitor of the four I listed below are good for the resolutions I want to use and 2) if anyone can give me any info on P95f, I'd be thankful. I can't find out much about it besides what's on the VS webpage.

Hey guys!! This is my first post to this board.

I am interested in buying a new 19" monitor for my system. I'm ready to make a purchase right now. Based upon specs I've narrowed down my decision to a few monitors but I can't find any reviews that go in depth about them. The monitors are:

Sony CPD-G420S
ViewSonic PF790
ViewSonic P95f

I am also considering the electron blue from LaCie.

I use my computer for gaming and graphics work. Right now I have an Acer 76e 17" monitor running at 1280x1024 resolution. I like this high resolution because it gives me lots of workspace on my desktop and in programs like Photoshop.

For games, I use lower resolutions and rarely go above 1024x768. The CRT guide on this site says that if I get a monitor that does 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz (optimal) but use a lower resolution on it (for games) then it won't look as good and could hurt the monitor.

How worse off will monitor performance be if I get a monitor that runs my desktop in 12x10 or 16x12, but then run my games at a non-optimal resolution, like 800x600?

Which of the monitors I listed do you think are best?

Pertinent system information: I now use a Radeon 32 MB DDR graphics card.

Any help and advice on any aspect of this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My PF790 can't even do 16x12@85hz, but I think there were 2 versions of this monitor and I have the older one. The text looked like crap at 12x10 on a geforce2 and 'ok' on a radeon. Colors and everything else were great, though, but I would probably suggest the newer p95f.

i have the sony g420s. i like it, although i don't terribly like running at 1280 x 1024 and having to scale things up. if i run it at lower resolutions then i feel guilty for having spent so much money on a 19" monitor. but it was betweeen the g420s and the p95f for me too. let us know which one you get, i was always curious how the p95f would work out. a great place to go for reviews on all the monitors is www.neoseeker.com, they are a compilation of all reveiws on the web, just search for 19" monitors.

i wish tom's guide would do an actual reveiw on crt's, oh well.

repeat after me, we are all individuals!
