New $2000 Gaming Build. Please Advise...

Please Give me you feedback on this build. I am a newb and I am having a guy build me a new gaming computer. He sent me this build and the cost is $2000. This includes his labor and a 3 year warranty on hardware replacement. This is will be my sons Christmas present and I want to make sure I am maximizing the performance for this amount. He will be doing mostly HD gaming and streaming. He is also starting to edit videos and animation. I would like this computer to meet his needs for the next few years. VR and 4k will probably be in the near future. I think I would like a more open case then he is recommending. Are there any components that you would not recommend? I am also am thinking of going to a i7 and a GTX 1080 graphics card. Thanks to all of your for your input. Its greatly appreciated.

Just did a drive by here and thought I would give you a hand! With a budget of 2000$ you can really shoot for the moon here. An I5 and gtx 1060 is way underpowered for what you are spending. Go for the I7 8700k and 1070 ti combo. You can look at my rig here and see I have changed out a few things to save you some money.

---Save some money on the nvme ssd for a sata 3 850 evo and get a bit more storage at the same time. The speeds of those nvme drives are not really noticeable when gaming or loading simple applications.
--- Get the I7 8700k over the I5! That will be the last processor your son will need for the next five years! Added in a nice cooler so when the machine does start to show it's age he can simply overclock it!
---- 1070 ti is about on par with a 1080 and you get to save some money. WIN! If you are willing to spend a bit more a 1080 ti is perfect here too, it will future proof his computer and he won't come knocking for a new gfx card in a couple years.
---- Don't spend much on a case!! If it holds your parts, looks good, and has good airflow look to spend no more than 50-60$ You see no performance increase over spending 100$+ on a case so save your money for what matters.
---- I threw in a 27" 144hz 2560x1440p monitor. With the kind of money you are spending you can push high fps and high resolutions, so do it! Don't skimp on the monitor it makes all the difference. With this rig DO NOT go 1920x1080 it is a waste of money for a I7//1070 ti!
--- Fill all of your case fan slots is the only other advice I can give.Gotta keep everything cool if you want to protect your investment.
--- Also try to find online retailers that offer no sales tax, you can save over 100$ if you find the right sellers. 😉

You will have a great gaming system now. Just make sure your monitor is atleast 2K 144 hz Gsync since you got 1080Ti. I know you can play on 4K also but I don't know how high above 60.

Do I really need to go with a 1080i or can I use a 1070i and save the $400, or is the 1080i worth the extra? Also not sure on what mobo to go with. The ones recommended above do not have as many usb ports as my sons current model. A lot of his peripherals use USB so I am worried he will run out. I know the case will have some USB in the front. What are you guys doing for extra ports? Lastly do I need a liquid cooler or any of the ones you guys mentioned be sufficient? Thanks

For a 2k monitor, a 1070ti is more than enough.

U can buy a USB dock for extra ports. You can even Connect it to the back if you buy a dock with lengthy wire.

The air cooler is enough for moderate oc like even upto 4.8ghz. Even the lower end liquid coolers will give about the same performance.

what is the resolution for video editing?
If 4k, 32 gb is a must, 16 gb is OK for 2k, good to have for 1080p.

GTX 1060 is entry level VR, 1070ti can oc to stock 1080, so will be good.

16gb is a fine for 1080p vids. For 4k, 32gigs might be useful.

And yes, the 1070ti would be fine for vr.

His major usage is gaming, 8700k will be much better than Ryzen. 8700k can also match Ryzen in video editing.

VR needs high fps for smoothness. And AMD doesn't give that.
