Hi,
I just purchased an 8300. It has a DVD read write drive. How do I find out
the specifications of the drive and how to use it?
Thanks, Jim

NEVERMIND!! Error reading the OPs post - which said "read-write."

<AFAIK Dell only offers +R/RW drives.> WRONG! The OP said DVD-ROM. Dell does
indeed provide DVD-ROM drives in the 8300 series.

Actually the OP stated "DVD read write drive", not DVD-ROM. Dell only
offers +R/RW. The drive would of come with some form of burning software
which will carry with it a tutorial or help guide for burning media. Mine
came with Sonic MyDVD and has a useful help guide.

If you go to the control panel and open up the system icon click then
hardware tab, then device manager. I would go to the DVD/CD drive. You
computer will tell you what is installed.

First step would be to check Device manager to see which manufacture/model
is in your 8300.
Then just do a google search for the specs on that drive

You can also use Belarc Advisor to get an inventory of your machine.

YMMV

Is it working o.k. ?

Mine has the same drive and I'm having a heck of a time burning dvd+r's with it. They swapped it out, it worked once. Second time it didn't and they swapped the motherboard and had me reinstall the SonicSoftware and it didn't work. The swapped the drive again and it still doesn't work.

I tried TDK media instead of hypermedia and it worked once, fingers
crossed that the functioning will continue.
