HP Touchsmart 320-1030 running Win 7 64-bit. BIOS is 7.15

Attempted to install A8-3850. Was not compatible. ("Error: Unsupported CPU installed. Will automatically power down in a few seconds.")

So I bought an A8-3800. HP explicitly says this is compatible.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-TouchSmart-300-Desktop-PC-series/5146287/model/5157097/document/c02966737#N102

I seat the CPU, put Artic Silver on, put heat sink back on, boot up, and black screen. Nothing.

Any theories greatly appreciated.

It seems you may be a little confused. See, HP lists the A8-3800 as compatible, not the A8-3850. Though since they're both on the FM1 socket you would think it would work, but that motherboard can only support CPUs with a 65w TDP maximum. The 3850 has a 100w TDP. My advice to you is to return the A8-3850 and purchase one of the compatible CPUs (listed on their site) such as the A8-3820 or A8-3800. Hope I could help :)

Am not confused. As I said in the original post I did in fact buy an a8-3800 afte the a8-3850 failed to work. The a8-3800 isn't working either.

You need to update your BIOS since you installed a newer processor as it is unclear whether your mobo supports it out of the box.

^ Here is the exact model of your computer along with the BIOS update.

You will need your old processor for this so reapply the thermal paste and place your CPU back in, then download the update.

Is the CPU fan spinning at all? Checked for bent pins?
Also try using different inputs like DVI instead of HDMI or whichever your monitor supports. This seems to work for some people.
