Apologies in advance for the length, but I want to provide complete details.

Short question: What should I try next? Do cases (case wiring) go bad?

I built my first computer in August of 2010 and it generally ran great. After a recent power outage (I was away, sleep mode, UPS drained before I got home) the pc rebooted once out of the blue, and a couple of weeks ago it would start up briefly, fans spin, lights come on, then abruptly shut off.
After reading a few threads here, and for other reasons, I got a new power supply (Corsair CX600M 600W), which did not fix the problem.

I then pulled components, eventually breadboarding the old motherboard which continually kept shutting the power off (the cpu fan would clearly spin for the fraction of a second).

At this point I ordered a new ASRock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer and an Intel Core i5-4690 Haswell (84W) which arrived yesterday.

By late last night, I put everything together and ... no power. Not even any fans spinning or lights. Just in case I had the polarity wiring wrong, I reversed the connection of the power and reset buttons, but nada at all. Yes, I did have the power on, and the PS toggle switch was on 1 and not 0.

My 5 year old case is an NZXT Tempest EVO. The old board was a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3. The Fatal1ty is the same height, but it is narrower. From the back of the PC the Fatal1ty does not extend towards the front, which was nice in that it gave me some more room to work, but I was unable to use and standoffs or screw in a 3rd row on that right edge.

This also made securing the 20+4 power connector a bit more difficult, but I ensured that it did stay connected (the no power was not because that came undone).

I put the 20 and the 4 from the PSU together and connected into the 24 connection on the board, but do I really only need the 20 and/or does it matter?

Is the logical next step to pull everything again and breadboard the new board by itself?

If I felt more confident with a voltmeter, what sorts of things would I specifically check?

I haven't researched the Fatal1ty board much yet, but should it have some sort of power led on the board itself? If it does, nothing is coming on.

I don't have another case to test with, but is it at all possible the case, specifically the button wiring be the issue?

I do know I have some more work ahead of me in any event, but at this point I would appreciate any tips or suggestions to get to the end faster.

Don't think this matters, but:

I have some 2 year old Mushkin Silverline 2x4GB 1333 RAM
I have 1 magnetic Western Digital Black 1 TB HDD
2 SSD's
XFX Radeon HD 5850
Win 10 (upgrade from Win7 Pro)

Solution

Its the cases, firstly try without the cases, u can put the motherbard at the cardboxs motherboard or anything. if the motherboard boot, just shut it down after getting to windows or whenever u want.
Remember this is just for testing, so don't use/play your computer without proper cases.

Its happen to me too and i just know it today. Let me know if it work.

Btw sry for bad english.

I hope this replies in the right place. Thanks for the answer, and your english is fine. When I get home from work I definitely plan to do the following:

remove switch connectors and try using a screwdriver (probably should have done this last night but it was late).

pull everything, remove from case and try booting.

if that fails, I will take another look at my cpu, maybe just maybe I got thermal paste somewhere (I kind of doubt this, but I need to check).

if there are any successes, add components back in (outside of the case).

if no successes, I guess I have to RMA the board?

If there are any other thoughts by anyone, please help. I am willing to believe that it could be the case/wiring, but that should be the first thing I eliminate tonight.

This one ended up being boring and mysterious.

I pulled everything out, breadboarded, and it spun up until the no memory beep.
I added the RAM in, fine.

I put my case connectors on (outside) and they worked.

Put everything back inside, still worked. Connected gpu and drives.

Boots up into Windows.

Best guess is when I first put it together something wasn't quite seated in my rush.

Always check the simple stuff I guess.
