My partner needs a new budget or refurbished laptop for our non-profit. Mostly doing excel work (need numeric pad) and genealogy research (browsing digital archives). We have windows and MS office licenses, so NO Chromebooks.

Mostly used as desktop replacement in our home office (with secondary monitor) or visitor centers (no secondary monitors). Weight and battery are less of a problem. Good screen, 15" - 15.6" ideally.

1. What is your budget?
$ 500

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
at least 14" screen, but 15" or 15.6" is better

3. What screen resolution do you want?
preferable 1080

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Semi desktop replacement; it is going to be used mostly stationairy in four different locations. Weight not a problem.

5. How much battery life do you need?
Less important, several hours is enough, almost always working close to power outlets.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop?
No, unless the grand kids come and want to play minecraft :)

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop?
Mainly browsing digital archives, working with MS office applications (we have access to Office365, but still using Office 2003, best version ever)

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
128-250 GB SSD as OS drive, we have free additional SSDs

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
Located in the Czech Republic, so please NO reference to US sellers.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
5 years +. The old fried laptop was a 10 year old Asus N56JR

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need?
None. Would be nice if it was included so we would swap it for an SSD bay.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
Until now we had mid-range Asus and Acer (travelmates), very happy with those. No real thing against any other brand as long as it gives good value for money (most Dell laptops here are relative expensive for example)

13. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Nothing to add.

Thanks, I checked them out. Unfortunately, the cheapest version of those Dell Inspirons are around $ 630 here in the Czech Republic (Europe). Like I mentioned, here in continental Europe Dell in general are more business oriented versions and relative expensive for what you get, and often not that great in their display reviews for the more budget variations.
