New Build. Advice?

I'm torn between getting an X99 system with the i7 - 5820k. Or building a Skylake system with the i7-6700k. They are both similarly priced, I will be suing the PC for rendering videos, gaming and general use. I already have a GTX 960 so I'm sorted there.

So should I get a Skylake build with all it's new features on the CPU and Motherboard? Or an X99 build with a 6 core cpu for that extra horsepower? If it helps, I'm not looking to upgrade this pc for a good few years either.

For rendering videos you want all the cores/threads you can get. The 6 core (12 thread) 5820k is better for your purposes.

For rendering, the x99 is pretty decisively better, and everything else is a push or close.

Do you think it will last a while, 4-5 years without an upgrade?

It will render well for years, you will need to replace your GPU about twice to keep up with gamin, but it will do the business for four to five years, and DX12 may be even better on it.
