5) General Questions/Overview

So is this setup too advanced for me? not advanced enough?

Is the Gtx 570 obsolete?

Do I need a six core processor or is quad all good?

What RAM do I really need?

Do I need the WS x79 or is stock/pro the better choice?

Will all these components work together?

Do I need additional cooling?

Can you RAID 1 an ssd to a hdd?

Where can I save here? please advise!

Thanks all!

Having had a quick look for anything really comparing 570 & 670 for editing, it seems to be mostly "opinion". Having said that, opinion seems to be there's not much between them, whichever is slightly better. The choice seems to boil down to the cheaper 570, or the 670, which is dearer, equal in editing, better in other things, and uses less power. Without budget constraints, I'd have to revise my opinion to say the 670 is better OVERALL, in the long term, but it's a close one, especially with budget limitations.

Try to get hold of that article on raid, it should be online. Really did explain it well. I'm not going to attempt to give advice on raid, cos there are so many different versions. Article explains pros and cons of each. It was titled "Project, understanding raid" or something like that. My vote for set-up would be i7-3770K + Asus P8Z77-V PRO.

thank you bluff you've been a great help.

thanks you've been the most help today do you think the deluxe is worth the extra 80$ over pro for the p8z77?

It's a bit swings and roundabout, it more a case of slightly DIFFERENT feature set, not one particularly better. The V pro seems to have everything most people want, and it's certainly much the more popular. You can do a direct comparason, side by side, on Asus' site. You'll see it's a bit more here, a bit less there, but unless you see something you really want on the deluxe, I would stick with V PRO. At least, it's the ONE I like, for what that's worth.

thanks again

Is the external hard drive a good choice? Do all my components fit together? Any thoughts or comments on my boot setup? And is there better RAM for this setup?

Main thing with external storage is to make sure it's USB 3 not 2. I see you've gone for Thunderbolt. Possibly good, or the future. You can get Thunderbolt Ext Raid arrays, but they are a ridiculous price (maybe one for the future, when they get more mainstream). No real need to change RAM. Crucial Ballistic sport, or GSkill Ares, or Corsair CML, are options, but no real need, unless someone else knows that one is "best". I'm not sure RAID 1 is best, but I'm not sure, so best read that article (or another).
