So my pc started freezing randomly after 6 Months. It's been running beautifuly until about 3 days ago. I thought maybe i had a virus. Every 20-30 min it freezes on me and I've tried running different programs and doing different things. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a software problem so I did a refresh through windows 8.
Everything ran fine and I even got my motherboard monitor stuff installed and got steam and iTunes reinstalled and it froze again. My specs:
windows 8.1
Asus 990 fx r2 motherboard
AMD 8350 black edition
16GB DDR3 Kingston Ram.
MSI GTX 970 graphics card.

Hi there Filius_Aurorae,

You can observe what is happening in Resource Monitor during the freezes. Do you see something abnormal such as high usage of HDD, CPU, RAM, etc? You can check out what process is eventually causing this.
Have you measured the temps? In case you haven't it may be a good idea to do so.

Apart from that, you can test your system's components.
- Run the computer with only RAM stick at a time. In case the issue persists, you can go the the second one and so on. You can attach it to different slots as well.
- Update your GPU drivers. In case your CPU has integrated graphics, you can take the GPU out and see whether you will get the same freezes.
- Test your HDD with a brand specific tool.

Resetting the CMOS will not hurt as well: http://www.howtogeek.com/131623/how-to-clear-your-computers-cmos-to-reset-bios-settings/

Thanks I will give this a shot and see what happens. As for temps, they are all normal...or operating temps I have monitored those because I figured that was it. I don't have integrated graphics, so I'm thinking of getting an older card and seeing what happens. I will definitely try the cmos reset.

As an extension of what was said above, I think you should check the "Event Logs" to see what is happening during the hang (if any processes are crashing and such).
A faulty HDD is defiantly a culprit in a situation like this so run some stress tests and see if your hard drive is in need of replacement, it could be as simple as the SATA connector needs to be replaced.

I will have to look into that as well. I reset the BIOS and tried it with one RAM stick in, tried both sticks, and still freezing. So if it's the HDD lets hope so! any ideas on where to go to stress test?

Tried new hard drive, ram, and graphics card. Called ASUS and they told me it's not a hardware issue, it's a windows issue. Called microsoft and they are just about worthless. They took me through some steps and after about 2 hours on the phone it was still freezing. Got Windows to boot and it freezes anytime I try to do anything. Micro$oft suggested I borrow a windows 8.1 disc and reinstall with that. Yet I've tried a windows 7 disc and still had the same issues.I'm at a loss here guys.
