New Build - Likely PSU or GPU overheating problems

Hey everyone! I recently built a PC and seem to be having a problem with the PSU or video card heat I think.

The system will randomly go into sleep mode in Windows 10. This is a new build and at first I was getting random system reboots with my new video card nearly constantly with a few stable hours at best, this occurred on Windows and Linux no matter what was running. So I switched to my old card and the system became stable. Except now it has randomly powered down twice into sleep mode. Both times while playing modded minecraft. Windows will go into sleep mode with no warning of doing so, it will then power up with no problem.

Trying it with no video card seemed to allow it to run stable, although I tried for about 45 minutes. I also tried with an an even older PCIE x16 card and it seemed stable as well.

CPU temperatures are stable with no spikes, GPU is running warm (it’s an old one) at about 40 idle/70ish when it’s been drawn on heavily.

I’ve checked all internal connections, risers, screws, video card, ram, thermal paste on CPU, CPU heatsink. No tested cards required direct PSU connections.

The only Windows Event Log is ID 41 kernal power error. This case only has 2 80mm fans, intake/outtake and space for 80mm despite being a mid size. I am unsure if I am having a heat problem or a PSU problem.

Any help is appreciated!

Hello... 1) I would expect your CPU/GPU-Intel HD 510 to be the best choice/performer here... due to DDR4 shared system memory use and internal connections/communications.
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+HD+510
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+220
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+710

2) Your OS has settings to set the times and even disable sleep modes... check your Control panel-Power options for all other devices in use too.

Thank you for you responses Ironsounds! I really appreciated them!

1) I's sorry if I am misunderstanding. Are you saying the integrated graphics chip would likely be better for system performance? If so, that is totally fine as I only need the video card for now to let me use my monitor as I lack a VGA to HDMI converter.

2)I have for now disabled all sleep modes, as well as switching power to high performance as I have read that can make a difference. I did this with the other 2GB video card and it still had the same problem. Ubuntu did this as well when I had that operating system installed.

When this was happening frequently the computer would sit in the BIOS set up screen no problem for any length of time, as well as not rebooting randomly when installing an OS.

If indeed both cards are lower performers than the on board graphics cards that's actually OK as I am using it for my monitor for now then.

Since I would like to solve the problem of the shut downs with the other card could heat have been the culprit? The 2 GB card was very low profile and had a very small heat sink compared to this card. The case is large for only 2 80mm fans I feel, there is no mounting for my 120mm unfortunately.

Since I have changed power settings I have not had a restart, even playing Minecraft or 7 days to die. The only other thing I noticed was the GPU seemed to spike before restart, but didn't build up to a hot point. Just spiked to it very quickly.

Could something be cutting the fans on the GPUs I have installed since that has happened to 3 different cards?

Thank you for all the help so far and any in the future!

Hello... Well a OS shutdown due to? Well Typically finding the right (older/newer) driver version will fix this type of GPU problem/compatibility.

There will be records of errors in your OS "Event viewer" the activity, calls, actions, problems, time, date will be recorded.

APPs Calls can cause them... and OS Calls can cause them... and hardware can cause them... We need to fix/look at them in that order first.

1) kernel 41 errors mean the OS was not properly shut down... either by You OR the hardware.

Here is the Windows event debug screen.

You NEED to be logged on as administrator to the OS...

Let's see what the OS is reporting as the error... Right click computer-manage-System Tools-Event Viewer-Windows Logs-System/Applications/Security.... Click on the "RED" errors, for more information, General/Details... and files/drivers/Apps, comments/suggestions/information associated with them B )

Thank you for your time Ironsounds!

Under Windows Logs there are red errors under System and Applications that line up with the computer going into sleep mode.

Here is the total error log - First one un wanted sleep action begins at

In the application logs at 6:18 there is an error at the same time

Unsure why this would cause a random reboot?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Hello... Maybe your power button wires are Loose/shorting? at the MB or some where else... Or the Case Button/switch itself is dirty/sticky/failing to return or failing in the "Closed" position... they mentioned the "Power button" reason B ) remove or get into the front case bezel and look at what your fingers has left behind... or see if the spring return on the switch plunger has a problem... or the switch needs replaced? B D

Basically there is "Crapware" or "Nagware" with Windows10... and these items keep haggling your system for acceptance, either from your wallet or into your more personal life activities. These are the "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID" messages come from... look at "Detail" tab in the Event viewer for their names... Basically un-install or sign up.

Basically "Cortana" and "?some online Microsoft TV on Demand or media outlet feature" were the one's causing problems a few months ago here... and with New OS Versions being forced on your PC recently... They could be Back to haunt you... and do so this time with "Sleep Commands" B /

Another place to look is your "Task scheduler" and remove all items "Tasks" that Windows defaulted there... you can check the times of theses scheduled tasks... and see if they are set for times you are using your computer... I just remove/delete them all... as I want total control of MY System.
Right click computer-manage-system Tools-Task scheduler

I'm sorry chegalhavara, can't believe I forgot that! I apologize for lack of quotes and formatting, can't find a page with the forum markup.

The PSU is an EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W, Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR, I've also updated the original post with this information.

I did use a used case for the build and it is entirely possible there is loose wiring. I have rechecked connections for the wires and switches the best I am able to. They seem ok. I may just buy a cheap smaller tower, I really don't need the space for expansion in here really. I totally agree about system control :) It was my biggest worry about switching to Windows 10, but I needed an OS that was Windows based and could only get 10 for free.

I have not had a random shut down since turning settings to High Performance as suggested by multiple online tutorials. Would driver conflicts cause random sleep/reboot patterns even in Ubuntu?

This has all been occurring in the last couple of days I'm afraid, clean Windows 10 install. I will definitely start going through and uninstalling unwanted apps as I have already noticed several I have no desire for already.

Thank you for your help so far! I will be check for details and be back to post those if any are strange looking!

If anyone sees any other possible problems this could be please let me know, I appreciate any help I receive.

Thank you for much

Update - I placed another 80mm fan on the side of the tower and that seems to have stabilized GPU temperature.

It has now powered down into sleep mode twice in the last several minutes. Game playing as well as posting here.

Both times it fell into sleep it gave this error:
License Activation (slui.exe) failed with the following error code:
8198 - In Applications Events

In System:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID Error code: 10016

Temps are stable and Windows thinks it has display drivers going. Bad PSU or is the actual slot on the MOBO damaged maybe?

Thanks for any help so far!

Ediit: It just fell asleep and woke itself up about 4 times in 30 seconds. Doing it every 45 seconds or so now.
