I thought Opterons came from a differnt fab and the X2's would be considered top end for the Athlon fabs.

Are the X2's inferior to the Opterons then? If so, why are they selling Opterons for less?

Hate issues with manufacturer aside.
**Slides issues off table**

OK, now your talking. So what makes the Opteron 175 a better overclocker than the X2-4400?

They are both dual core, they both have 2x1meg cache, they both are socket 939, and they are both priced within $20 of each other, the Opteron being cheaper.

Does the Opteron 175 really have much more overclocking ability verses the X2?

What are the major physical (Hell or psychological for that matter) differences between these two chips that makes the Opteron better?

Now, apparently, the Opterons are tested more and are more suited to run longer in more damanding worksaces and thus can be ran at higher speeds.

If you go to anandtech's forums, and you give them 2 choices between the 4400+ and the 175, every one of them would jump at the 175.

I guess it depends on your taste, Opterons were meant to be run at long periods of time, so you are generally getting a better OCer.

Opterons cost more, the only reason Monarch has it cheaper is because it's OEM. A 4400+ cost $480? while a Opteron 175 cost $520.

I will investigate that issue further, I have a month!

Opteron 175 socket 939 2.2ghz 2x1meg cache $470
or
Athlon X2-4400 socket 939 2.2ghz 2x1meg cache $490

If it performs better and costs $20 less, and is better quality, that is the chip for me!

Up until about a month ago, Amd only had one fab. It made all thier chips.
They brought a new fab on line to make 300mm wafers. It is also making all the 64 bit variants. Soon it will be making all the chips @ 65 nanos, while the old fab is retooled.
The s939 opterons are to boost the use of Amd in work stations. It seems that desktop mobos are good enough (nice compliment).
It's too bad there isn't some LL pc6500 floating around, because the opterons could use it .

First, Thank You EVERYONE!

I finally made my mind, i bought

Cpu: AMD opteron 165
Mobo: DFI Ultra-D

HSK: Xp-120 + #1 rated 120mm fan on newegg.
Memory: OCZ Pc3200 (2 x 1gb)
GPU: EVGA 7800 GT

Temp from smartguardian is 20c ~ 25c
pcmark05 score 5070
3dmark05 score 7800
no oc. i am very happy ^ ^, run every game smoothly.
guess no need to oc it. it's fast enough already

Have you oc'd this any further yet?

What type of fps do you get in games like Half life 2? or world of warcraft?

I'm looking to build a system just likes yours.

Does anyone know where I can get these AMD processors in the UK?
