Greetings everyone,
Been using Tom's Hardware for a couple of months and I decided to join in. Most of the threads that I have read have been oriented around building a older P4 computer. This is not the first computer that I have built; a couple new ones (1366, 1155 and soon to be 2011) and an older 939 and a P2 way, way back.
I have, for many matters, read many forums on this type of build and tried to allocate all of the knowledge from other people and their issues to mine, and still I have not found a way out of the labyrinth.
Description:
I have all the parts to build it, and have a few times but I run into the same blue screen of death (BSOD) every single gosh-darn time. I will list my hardware and the list that I have performed in attempts to get the computer working.
Here is the hardware that I have to make up the system.
- Power Supply: Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 (720 W)
- CPU: P4 3.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1M cache (if I am not mistaken)
- Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
- RAM: 4 x 1 Gb G-Skill PC3200 DDR400
- Video Card: HIS IceQ 3 Turbo Radeon HD 3850
- Optical Drive: LG DVD+RW (speed I am not sure of at this time)
- Standard Floppy (1.44 Mb)
- Hard Drives: 2 x Maxtor 80 Gb, DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133
- Wireless card to be implemented after the computer runs
Software known:
- BIOS 1024
- Would like Windows XP Professional SP3 (downloaded and on a Lexmark 1 Gb USB)
Here is a list of what I have done so far...
First off, I have two P4C800-E Deluxe boards, thought the other had a issue, so I bought another, which I have stated below.
Note: (Try Number)
(1-5). Connected all components and turned on the computer. BIOS posted well, had to reset the CMOS time and date settings which is normal enough.
- I connected the HDD in series (Master and Slave) to the IDE-Primary port on the board, not the Primary-RAID port. The BIOS recognized that I had the two HDDs, the DVD drive and the floppy. I changed the IDE configuration from S-ATA to P-ATA in Enhanced Mode and turned RAID and the Promise Controller OFF. Did not play with the clock, fan speeds or anything.
- The first HDD already had Win XP installed on it from another computer, so I did a simple swap. A swap in which I have done before and the OS booted 'sans problème (no problem).' With no USB in, I tried to boot from the master HDD, all it did was so the loading screen of Win XP and then quickly flash to a BSOD [which I presume was the 0x7B (0xF78DA524, 0xC0000034, 0X0000000, 0x0000000)] and just start a rebooting loop.
- On the rare occasion the screen where one may pick, 'Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc.' appears, I tried all of the options and it just reboots back to this screen or the regular appearing BSOD flash screen.
- Thus, I figured there was something up with the board (most likely my ignorant self). So I bought a new board.
(6-8). [USB BOOT] I swapped out the HDD with Windows on it for a fresh Maxtor 80 Gb (So now I am running two fresh Maxtors). This time I force booted from the USB drive with the downloaded Win XP on it. After booting from the USB, I pressed F6 to designate a HDD for Win XP to install too. But the funny thing is, is when the SCSI or RAID additional device blue window opens, no mass storage device are seen on the computer at all. I can put in a floppy, but I do not have a floppy with the manufacturer support, which I am not to sure what it is about (I believe it has something to do with the drivers on the board or the Promise controller).
- After I could not choose anything from the menu, I continued the extraction from the USB to nowhere (as it seemed) and then I was demonstrated the beloved BSOD, refer to the above, occurring once again.
- I attempted, as well, in changing the Enhanced Mode to Compatibility Mode and setting the IDE configurations to P-ATA and Primary P-ATA + S-ATA, which did not seem to work either. Also, I disabled Hyper Threading as I read a couple of post stating that HT could be an issue during some instances, which lead me nowhere.
(9-12). I turned the Promise controller ON, and kept Enhanced Mode ON, although RAID was OFF. The Promise controller did pick up my Maxtor drive (I only had one connected to the Primary-RAID IDE connector = acts as an IDE connector [to my knowledge]). The other HDD was on the IDE Primary connector. The BIOS did recognize my Maxtor as the master and my S-ATA 378 as my RAID-0 drive on the RAID connector in the Boot Sequence.
Note: From what I have read, one cannot boot from a RAID connection, in which I tried to do in try 12.
- Again, attempted to boot from the USB drive and the same thing transpired; the computer did not see any HDD to write Win XP to and concluded with a BSOD, refer to above.
My HDDs were freshly formatted before even attempting to get the computer to start running on a new storage system. I, regrettably, do not have an authentic Win XP Pro compact disk or floppies for that matter.
To be truly honest, I am offly confused, disappointed and slightly frustrated with myself and the lack of results that I have been receiving. The only other option that I have to do would be to get new HDDs with a S-ATA connection and attempt that. I do believe that that is my last option, as far as I know, in which I hope I am wrong.
I do hope that my explanations of what I have done are detailed enough so that hopefully one of you folks can put yourselves in my shoes and see what I am missing.
Much Regards,
Blake
