I'm building a new system and am split over my cpu/gpu decision. I'll be using it for gaming, video editing, and light vfx work. I am looking for something that can do ray tracing.

Should I go with the Ryzen 7 3800x with an RTX 3080, or a 5800x with an RX 6800xt to take advantage of the direct access feature?

I already have an MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk for the motherboard and 2x16 3200 Gskill Ripjaws V for RAM.

I'm aware we don't have independent benchmarks yet, but going by best guess based on what we know about the 6800x, what do you think?

Solution
What will be your gaming resolution?
Unless you will be gaming at 4k resolution, it seems that 3080 will be a bit of overkill.
Perhaps a moot point since 3080 is not easily found for sale except from scalpers.

I am impressed by the ipc gains from the amd 5000 series and would go that way.
But again, it may be a moot point since you can;'t buy them either.

I would go with:
Ryzen 7 5800x and the RTX 3080.
Half of the time I encountered drivers issues (bugs) with a AMD GPUs.
