Oh, great gurus of TH.... I am in need of assistance!
POST and BIOS recognize hard drive but when trying to install Win 8.1 (OEM) on my new build, it asks me where I want to install and this is my only option.

So is Windows not recognizing my 1TB HD? Or do I have a hardware problem? Could it be my BIOS settings?

I put this rig together using these stickies:

Step-by-Step Guide to Building a PC

PERFORM THESE STEPS before posting about POST/boot/no video problems!

The only way I can test hardware components is to RMA. I have no other system to try them in.
I am currently running on integrated graphics while RMAing my graphics card.

Yeah any time you format a hard drive it takes about ~12 - 15% of the primary HD space, so a 1TB hard drive will actually be something like 931GB after formatting.

They are right - that IS your 1TB hard drive where you want to install Windows. Go ahead and be happy!

BUT they are wrong about how that number came up. It is NOT because the system has already used up some space. It is because hard drive makers and Microsoft can't agree on the words!

A HDD maker says "1 Terabyte" means 1,000,000,000 bytes. Microsoft uses an old habit of programmers and defines "Kilobyte" as a power of 2, specifically 1,024. So it says that "1 Terabyte" means 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes, which works out to 1,073,741,824 bytes. So, Windows will tell you that the 1,000,000,000 bytes on the new empty HDD comes to (1,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824) = 0.9313 TB, or 931.3 GB. It's actually the SAME amount of space - NONE is used up! The confusion is just because Microsoft uses the same words (TB and GB) as HDD makers, but thinks they mean something different.

AFTER Windows has been installed you will find that the FREE SPACE on the HDD is less than 931 GB. Probably about 30 to 50 GB will actually have been used to store the Windows OS.

Wow, Paperdoc. That explanation sounds more complicated than it did years ago when we talking about bytes, KB and MB. But the basic math behind it is still the same :)

Thanks again everyone. You wouldn't believe how embarrassed I am that I thought I had a situation when I didn't. But I've never installed an OEM before.

Hey yall. I know its been a while since this thread has been used, so i thought i would use it. Im having the same exact problem as clockwork treefrog with that same screen. I have the windows disk in there and thats the only way im able to get to that screen. In the previous posts, i didnt really understand how the solution to the problem was handled. Could someone please enlighten me on how i can fix the issue? Thanks.

There was no issue after all. I just chose that drive and installed.

Ok so i chose that drive, clicked next, then it says "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information." What do i need to do now?

I'm sorry but I can't help with that. Anyone else care to help?

(Thanks Clockwork for alerting me to his question.)

Sir, please make your own thread regarding this issue. Using another persons thread doesn't help and makes things very messy on the forums for us. Plus, most people will not respond to a thread that's already been answered. Thank you.

My apologies. I found this thread thru google and decided to signup for toms hardware so that i could chat with you guys. Im having the same issue with that same screen shown above. Only difference is im trying to install windows 7 instead of 8.1. Again, i apologize for responding on this thread. This is my 1st forum ive ever been on. How would i go about creating a new thread? Thanks.
