I'm building a new box for my mom. I've built computers in the past, but it's been a few years and I'm hitting an error I've never had before. Any help appreciated!
The build (all these are tested and working):
- Rosewill 500 watt PSU
- MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming Intel Motherboard
- Intel Core i5-3350P 3.1GHz Quad-Core
- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 2 x 4GB DDR3
- SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III SSD
- Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit
What happened:
I started with a PNY Geforce 530 GPU, hooked it up and couldn't get any video. My monitor showed a black screen (not the "No Signal" message) and reported it was trying to push 560p, and another monitor came up with an error of "Not optimal resolution." I tried both DVI ports and the HDMI port. This card didn't have a 6-pin power connector.
To test, I took out an older card from my rig, an HIS Radeon HD 5770. Everything worked like a charm, so I assumed the Geforce was DOA. I went to exchange it, but they were out and the closest thing was a PNY Geforce 550. I hooked it up (this one did have a 6-pin connector) and it did the same thing as the 530.
Thinking it was a driver issue. I put the Radeon in the top slot and the Geforce in the bottom, so I could have video signal to install the drivers for the Geforce. I installed the newest ones, powered down, and removed the Radeon and put the Geforce in the top slot. It gave me the same issues as before. I tested all the combinations of the cards being on top/bottom, and the Radeon always worked and the Geforce always gave me the black screen. I never installed any ATI drivers, the Radeon just worked automatically.
The second Geforce isn't DOA, because windows recognized it was inserted when I installed the drivers. I made sure to hook up the 6-pin power connectors to each of the cards when testing them, and tried all DVI/HDMI ports. The Mobo manual says it suppots Nvidia crossfire, so I don't know why the ATI card would work and not either Nvidia.
My questions:
1) Anyone know what's going on with the Geforce cards, or how to get it them to work?
2) They don't make the Radeon 5770 anymore. Would a different Radeon 5xxx probably work?
3) If anyone has a different card recommendation, I'm looking for something in the $0-$120 range (mom isn't a gamer, so nothing fancy is needed.)
Thanks!
