hey everyone, i was just wondering if there would be any issues with me setting up my system with these drives? i accidentally purchased the wd red without knowing that it was optimized for NAS because i found a 2tb on sale for $55 only... what would be the optimal way to set up those 2 - it's been 15 years since i've built a pc and i know nothing about raid, etc... last pc i built, i had to manually set 1 hd to master and the other to slave... please help.

pc will be primarily gaming with graphics designing/drawing when i get my cintiq

set up
intel i7 6700k
msi z170a m7
16gb g skill ripjaws ddr4 3000
kraken cooler
gigabyte 980ti xtreme
evga 750 g2
samsung 850 500gb ssd
wd red 2tb hd

do you simply want the SSD for boot and the RED for storage? if so install windows on the SSD and then any programs you want to access quickly, and then simply add the red and it should pop up as drive:b (or some other letter) then just use that drive as a general storage drive, but have the BIOS boot from the SSD.

I still have a 14 GB master slave setup. works well enough whenever I fire up the computer for fun. it is a shame I was just a bit young to really experience them.

yeah, SSD would be for boot, games and programs like photoshop, maya, etc... RED would only be for storage of music, images, video, etc...

You should use the SSD as the boot drive and then setup the 2tb drive as just normal storage, but you will still be able to use the remaining space on the SSD for games and whatever you want. The WD Red is fine as a normal storage however you may not want to use the software which usually comes with those drives as it is not good for the drive if it is going to be used as a single drive (alongside your ssd). The reds are also quite good because they have a better reliability than some of the other color drives.

especially if it is an "enterprise Red" they are built like tanks and actually perform very well and are faster than blues I find.

local shop had it incorrectly labelled and the clerk gave it to me for said price. would've gotten 2 but it was the only one they had on shelf
