New card?

Hi there.

I have an (Old) Geforce 2 GTS which has given me years of stirling service.
However, I think it's time to think about a new card. Any ideas please. My
system is:

AMD Athlon 1800+ XP
Soundblaster Audigy 2
DFI NFII Ultra M/B
512MB

Plus the usual other stuff. Is there any advantage to an MX440 etc, or
should I go the whole hog with a 6800??? I may go to the 3000+ CPU.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Nathan.

Radeon 9800pro ($200.00).

Your system's CPU and RAM are too slow to take advantage of a 6800, I'm
sorry to say.

You'll be CPU limited by that XP1800 with a fast DX9 card. A FX5700 Ultra,
FX5900, 9800 Pro or a 9600XT are all excellent. Be very sure you check out
the specs of low priced 9800 Pros. Recently, a swack of 128 bit 9800 Pros
have made it to the budget market. I'd be very suspicious of a $200 9800 Pro
being a 256 bit card. They perform at sub 9600XT levels. A true 9800 Pro has
256 bit memory.

Yea, and they only cost abou $200.00.

pop in a 5700ultra or higher (no LE or XT editions)
- or 9600pro or higher (no SE editions)
and your system will play Far Cry, HL2, Doom III
quite well.

Not true, so long as he's got a decent Nforce 2 board, he's still in the
running.

Primarily, he could upgrade to a XP3200+, and pair up two 512MB sticks
of PC3200 memory to take advantage of both the 400mhz FSB and _dual
channel_ memory.

Dual channel is a very nice speedup to overall system performance. Some
have equated it to a +1 step processor upgrade (2000 to 2400 for example).

Then he'd be fully ready and able to handle the GF6 series. The NForce
2 is an incredibly stable and efficient platform still. Only thing
better would be a high end P4 or Athlon 64 system.

So then... no 5900XT?? even if it can o'clock to full 5900 speed?

why? is there something else crippled on the 5900XT?
