New components, now occasional CPU overheating, exponentially frequent crashes.

I recently upgraded my gaming tower to include an EVGA GeForce 970 4GB (previously an EVGA 560 Ti 2GB), and 4x4GB 1600 RAM (previously only 2x4GB), and an ADATA 516 GB SSD that I put a fresh instance of Windows 7 on.

So far, I'm keeping my AMD FX 8350 CPU and ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard.
Since I've changed components on April 12th, I started experiencing occasional instances where the computer would shut itself off during the newly released game I've been playing due to an apparent CPU overheating error which would make itself known to me on the next post.

Yesterday, after turning all the graphics settings way down (which I'm pretty sure I shouldn't have to do)and the computer still shut itself down I decided I wouldn't play games until new thermal paste came in the mail.

Today (April 15th), the computer has begun to shut itself off more quickly and frequently than before, to the point a few minutes after start-up even when simply browsing, and I'm not getting that (or any) error notification at post. BIOS stated CPU temp between 71 C and 85 C when I got the notification, but the other times, it hasn't overheated, staying between 55 and 67 C. What new component isn't playing nicely or old component needs replacing?

Solution
New GPU is probably making whole computer, including CPU work harder and if you are using stock CPU cooler it's time to get better one or at least reapply paste on it and clean it good.
It could also be a problem with inadequate PSU.

Do you think think the Cooler Master Silent M 850W PSU is inadequate for my machine now?
What aftermarket cooler would you recommend for my CPU? I have a Rosewill Challenger ATX Mid, so size is a small factor, I think.

That case should have enough depth (since already has 120mm fans) for something like this to fit in: http://www.lc-power.com/en/product/power-supplies/lc-cc-120-x3/
Or even a liquid cooler of this size: http://www.lc-power.com/en/product/power-supplies/lc-cc-120-lico/
Which is easy to install anywhere. Radiator fits instead of back fan on the case. Both can provide cooling even for moderate OC.
I believe that PSU is enough for your needs.

Unfortunately, I can't find listings for your specific recommendations anywhere, but I'll use them as a springboard to find another one that will work instead. Making sure I have this right, as long as the fan is 120x120, and the heat sink matches an AM3+ socket, I'll be ok?

Most if not all aftermarket CPU coolers, air or liquid come with mounts for all kinds of sockets and they list it on their sites together with size measurements.
Minimum for your processor would be air cooler with 1 or 2 120mm fans and 4 - 6 heat pipes. The LC Power air cooler is an example of cheaper cooler, much better than standard AMD cooler on the par if not a bit better than ubiquitous CM 212 Evo that is so popular. Anything in that range should do up to mild OC.
Of the liquid range, something like CM 120XL Nepton would be a good starting point.
All in one liquid coolers are easy to install and in some cases even easier than large air coolers.
