Nice to meet you all. I am a new user here and am putting togeather my first computer. As of right now I have the following on order.

p4c800-E Deluxe mobo
P4 3.2GHz 32bit 1mb Mp cpu
Raptor 74 GB 10,000rpm Serial ATA Drive
Verto GeForce 6800 GT 256MB AGP Video Card
1x Kingston 184 Pin 512MB ECC DDR PC-3200 ram
IW-X710 case 430W with 1x120mm fan
52x24x52 INT IDE CDRW
(hopefully it is all compatible)

This computer will mostly be used for mmorpg games such as Neverwinter Nights.

Can anyone of you think of any construction tips or settings that I should implement or think of anything that I am missing?

Also I have read somewhere that I might need something for the SCSI bus. Do you know if this is true or should I be able to assemble this with everything that I have ordered?

In summary any suggestions on settings software or hardware would be a great help.

I can't thank you enough, MM

What SCSI bus? And why that board?

I'd ditch the 875 chipset motherboard for an 865, not worth the extra cost.

Should be running 2 ram chips, not just one. P4's with the 8x5 chipsets only shine with dual channel ram, otherwsie they're choked for bandwidth.

So, replace the motherboard with an Abit IS7 or the Asus P4P800-e Deluxe (Crashman will chime in with his views on these boards in next post, but I've still yet to see any problems with them personally), and add either another 512(my suggestion) or replace the 512 chip with 2 256MB chips.

Oh yeah,a nd ditch the ECC.

just plain lol

ASUS P4P800S-X
P IV 2,4 @ nothing caus this board doesn't OC for [-peep-]
2x512MB Corsair pc4000
120 maxtor SATA
Sapphire Radeon 9800pro 128mb
Watercooled

heya mickymouse;

Here are some changes that i think many people will agree are for the best.

mobo: Abit IS7
CPU: p4c 3.2Ghz 512K 800FSB
GPU: BFG 6800GT-OC
2x512MB Crucial PC3200 non-ecc

The Abit is less expensive and arguably better quality, and perfoms just as well.
The reason for a northwood instead of a prescott is the heat issues, and lack of performance in the prescott.
The reason for the BFG card is because of the performance quality, and lifetime warantee.
The reason for the memory change is quality, also you need to run dual channel for the bandwidth the p4 is a dog without it, also you dont need error correction for gaming, its for file serving and things of that nature.

These changes are essential, dont argue just do it -=P~~~~

regarding the bus I was just reading about it in a do it yourself forum and it was talking about hard drives connecting to the motherboard. But I realize now that this HD is SATA not SCSI. But hhere was the quote

" If speed is your biggest concern, go for the SCSI interface. Keep in mind that with SCSI you will have to purchase the additional hardware necessary for the SCSI bus."

and as far as the board it was just suggested to me in the following forum thread.

thank you all for all your help, MM

Of course a 15,000 RPM SCSI drive will be faster, but at a much greater expense. And you'll only get big bandwidth differences if you go with a larger RAID array, probably RAID5 with 4 or more drives would be best. So the whole idea of SCSI being faster could lead you down a very expensive path.

Thanks again for everyones input. At this point I am thinking of keeping the
p4c800e deluxe mobo because with all the shipping it does not really save me any money to get the IS7.

I am going to get the BFG 6800GT-OC and the 2 x 512MB Crucial PC3200 nonecc ram.
However there are many types of this including the balistic versions and the different voltage. Can anyone tell me what exact model I should order?
thanks,MM

Their standard RAM is Cas 2.5 and Cas3. Their Ballistix RAM is Cas2. The Ballistix also overclocks well, if you ever get the urge to to that. The performance difference at stock speed is small, but measurable.
