New computer, how to get OS onto SSD and keep it secondary?

Hi everyone. Got a question about installing the OS on a new build I'm getting onto the SSD. I'd like to keep it as the secondary drive, and my HDD as my primary, and I've seen the regular way of doing it (just have SSD plugged in and install OS, then plug HDD and redirect all files to HDD). So my brother did it this way and he has some random programs sneaking into the SSD, slowly filling it up. He suggested that I install the OS on the HDD then migrate it to the SSD to keep it as a secondary, so I'd have complete control of what goes into it. Is this a good way of doing that? Any other good methods?

I'm going to have a 1 TB HDD and 120 GB SSD. Decent amount of SSD space, but I still don't want invisible programs filling it up.

For those curious, this is what my brother got me :D (prices are after coupons and stuff applied)

Thanks, any help/suggestions appreciated

That doesn't solve the purpose of what I'd like to have my SSD to be used for - solely for OS, a secondary drive.

I may just do that though, did some research and cloning OS like that isn't "efficient."

What does "primary" or "secondary" mean to you? In computer terms, your OS drive is your boot drive. In practical terms, I think you are saying you want most of your stuff on your HDD.

Install OS onto SSD. When you install programs, manually change them to D: or E: or whatever letter your HDD is.

Some stuff will go into Windows folder regardless. Also Windows updates etc will grow your WinSxS folder over time. That's the way Windows goes.
