i am trying to get away from amd, not that they are bad, but i would like an intel.

i have been looking at the intel i7 4790k for a while now and i was wondering if it is good for gaming. i play my computer on my 45 in tv and i would like to get another gtx 760.

budget is about 850 for mobo and cpu.

other tower components:
corsair obsidian 750
asus gtx760
1 ssd
1 hdd
3 disc drives
(would like to get another ssd so i will need 6 sata ports on mobo.)

Are you kidding? Your asking if a new i7 is good for gaming.

It's the best, there is nothing better (even a $1000 Ivy-E chip in a LGA 2011 work station is still a generation behind Haswell). But honestly, a 4690 is more than enough for a gaming rig. The 4790 offers 8 strong Intel threads(vs. 4), but it's overkill.

Get an i5 over the i7 if you're strictly gaming. There's little to no performance boost from the i5 to the i7. I7 would help more in more multi threaded tasks like video editing/3d rendering/etc.

You'll be better off getting an i5 4690k and a stronger GPU.

that i7 isn't going to perform all that different against an i5-4690K in a majority of games, if you're looking to save a bit. for $850, though, you could get an i5, a decent mobo, a cooler, an SSD &, provided you got a decent PSU, either another 760 to SLI or a 770 (i'd go with the SLI).

the reason i asked about intel is because i dont know much about them. there are so many different ones with so many different socktets.

ill give the i5 a good look at. sorry hazle, i wont get a gigabyte mobo because i have had nothing but problems in the past with them. relly would like an asus or evga.

ill also be buying my stuff from a microcenter store because there is one by my house and because they have great service.

i forgot to mention i have a coolmax zu 1000b psu and a corsair 750w psu also.
