Hello all!
So I have a retro PC, and wanted to upgrade my Intel Celeron 533MHz CPU on it.
I bought a new Intel Pentium III 800 MHz, Socket 370 and when I turn on my PC, it runs but the screen is black. Nothing shows up. I've read online and probably the problem is in BIOS, I need to update it. My BIOS version is 1013, I went to ASUS site, there are only 4 files to download for BIOS, 1 is a tool, 2 are BIOS 1014 Beta versions (I heard people don't recommend to use beta BIOS), and the last one is 1013A. And on CPU-upgrade site it tells me that my CPU needs 1013.004 BIOS version. So I guess I need to download that 1013A and update it? Anyone knows solution? I'm new to all of this, so sorry for my ignorance, but I hope my question is clear, I've heard if you screw up BIOS installation, you can say goodbye to your motherboard, and I don't want that to happen.
My motherboard is Asus P2B-F btw.

I think it's possible that 1013A MAY be the same as 1013.004.
Regardless.....I don't think it will hurt you upgrading from 1013 to 1013A....so I would definitely upgrade it WITH THE OLD CPU and try it again with the new CPU when you are finished.
Thank you! I'll get ahold of floppy disk soon and give it a try, then will post update.

1013A only adds microcode for stepping C0 Coppermine. Unless your P3-800 is C0 or higher, then 1013 which you already have on there should have worked.
How do I know if my CPU is C0 ?
This is the processor I own.

Does your board even support a 133 MHz FSB? Perhaps only the Piii 800 with the 100 MHz FSB is compatible? Normally this doesn't cause a black screen but would cause the system to run slower.
I didn't even thought about that! I don't think my board supports it. So is the solution to buy a new 100 MHz CPU or to upgrade BIOS and deal with it? My OS is Windows 98 btw, if anything helps.

As already noted, the mainboard and it's BIOS would have needed to support the lower core voltages Coppermine required if the newer 800B/800C processors were used....

As these CPUs were from the WIndows 2000/early XP era, and single threaded, each is trounced by anything else made this decade, of course...
