i currently have 12 gb of ram, no water cooling, an i3-4130 (2 cores, 3.4 ghz), and a geforce gt 740. please tell me if you need more information!
also, what graphics card could i get for 300 -$400 for my computer? thanks a bunch!

There are a few good all around units you can get. The XFX TS 550 is a great value choice, also the Seasonic S12II 520 would be enough, or the 620 would be a little extra room just in case. EVGA 550 G2 or GS are excellent, you can also get the 650 G2 or GS for extra room as well.

the GPU upgrade is very needed, alot more than cpu, youc an always save up a little while after for the i3 6100 which is intels new skylake i3,it still has 2 cored and 4 threads but has hyperthreading and beats out the fx 6300 and fx 8320e in games with ease

Except that then he needs a new motherboard and memory (and Windows License). He can get an i7-4790 or i5-4590 or any other of a number of better LGA1150 processors and re-use his current hardware.

Yes thats true but i think thats also something he should think about, some people want the new skylake for ddr4,its a hard decision depending on what he wants and where he wants his pc to go in the future hardware wise

i assume he has adequate power supply as his current gpu is older architecture and less power efficient, thats just my assumption though

The best bang for your buck for gaming is a new GPU period, I would go for a 960 4GB /380X, they cost around 200-250 US (not sure where you live) you should see night and day difference. I wouldn't even think about CPU until you upgrade that GPU.

That still leave you with some money to get a new PSU if you need it.

following on,im not sure what PCIE power cables the GT 740 requires which could be more or less than what the 370 and 750ti requires

GT 740 does not require PCIe power, nor does most 750ti except for a couple very heavily overclocked ones. The 370 however does.

how do i know if my motherboard can support it?

It will, PCIe GPU's are basically universal. Its more whether you have enough power from your PSU. What is the brand and model?

great answer! thanks! its a lepa n500 500w

cool, what do i need to look for in a new one? thanks a lot! 😀

you just need a quality unit!corsair are one of the main brands, anything from 500w up will do as long as its at least rated 80+bronze,which means that the unit will constantly supply 80 percent of the power thats it sais,if you plan to add more power hungry components to your system in the future then you will need a unit like 600 -700w for example,a lot of people use between the range of 500-700w PSU's
Also if you want to make your system look better with better cable managment you can look at a semi-modular or a full modular unit
