How do I connect a new Dell monitor S2721DS to older Dell XPS 8700? Both the CPU and the Monitor have DisplayPort & HDMI. Monitor came with an HDMI cable, which doesn't work if I just connect the monitor port to the CPU port. Please help! I'm now 80 years old and my tech skills are sorely out of date! Thanks!

Make sure that the monitor is set to display HDMI instead of DisplayPort. You can do this by following these steps:
1) Press the MENU key on the front of the monitor (3rd button from the left).
2) Use the UP and DOWN volume buttons to move through the OSD menu and select INPUT SOURCE. Press the > button to move into that menu.
3) Scroll down to HDMI 1 and press the > button again to select it.
4) The display should change to HDMI 1.

You can also set it to auto-select from the same menu.

The manual can be located HERE. You specifically want page 40.

Thanks for your quick reply. However, I have actually tried all that with no luck. A bit more information: This is the second monitor (and yes, I know how to use the Display Settings to connect a second monitor, which I have done in the past.) I receive these messages: "No HDMI 1 signal from your device. Pressany key on the keyboard or move the mouse to wake it up. If there is no display, press the monitor button to select the correct input source." I have done this also, and HDMI 1 is selected. Then I get "No HDMI 1 signal from your device." I'm thinking that the older (2015) CPU may have a different version of HDMI than the current monitor. Other ideas?

I know hooking up some computers to a HDCP port on monitor or TV will not show a picture. If this is your case
(HDCP 1.4)
HDCP needs to handshake from computer to monitor. I don't know what video card your using or on board integrated motherboard GPU.

Display port cable should fix you right up if this is the issue.

NVIDIA Version GeForce GT 720, according to nvidia control panel.
Ok, showing much ignorance here, but are you saying DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable? (I don't even know what variations these things come in.)

Update: Received the cable, still doesn't work. So I rebooted - or tried to. Got message ""unsupported display configuration. Power off...." Shutdown, removed cable; powered up. Booted ok. Finally got in touch with Dell - through Marketing, not Support. I ordered the Dell cable Marketing recommended. Stay tuned...
