Hi, so recently my hp elitebook 2530p has died due to HDD failure and i have the choice of getting a new custom built desktop or a MSI GE62 APACHE 15.6" LAPTOP I currently already have a custom built desktop but I no longer have a laptop. I dont know which one to get. Any suggestions?

the laptop cpu is crap and its has severe heat issue. the laptop hits 164 degrees when on google chrome. i think the cpu heat issue killed the hdd.

First off, your Desktop pcpartpicker link doesn't show your build, you need to copy the permalink.

Secondly, if you are happy with your desktop PC right now, you could indeed just replace the HDD of your laptop with another HDD or like geofelt said, with an SSD. Even with an older laptop like yours SSD should do wonders. If you are concerned about the heat, you could throw out the DVD player and replace it with Hard Drive Caddy (you can get one for your model in eBay for 9$) and put the HDD/SSD in there. From the pictures it looks like it would mean that the drive is no longer near the hottest components. And I don't see any reason why a drive using DVD SATA port couldn't be used for boot drive.

Should you still get a new laptop instead, I'd still throw out the DVD player, get the Hard Drive Caddy, put the 1 TB HDD that comes with it in there and buy an SSD as a primary drive.

There, the new link should lead you to the list on pcpartpicker and i did get that laptop for free so it is a beater and im kinda looking for a more powerful machine.

Depends on what you use your laptop for. If you need a mobile gaming machine get the MSI laptop. If not and you only use it for light workload (surfing, watching movies etc), I'd keep the old laptop or buy a new cheap laptop and invest the rest in desktop. If the pcpartpicker list shows your upgrading plans then I'd say that getting a considerably stronger GPU should be within your budget, considering you are planning to buy a 1100$ laptop. Perhaps something like Geforce 970 or AMD R9 390.

im actully going to price match that laptop to $714 due to fry's internet price match policy. and i do some gaming on my laptop, teamspeak 3, fraps, sony vegas, schoolwork. generally everything if im away from my desktop.
