New Dimension 2400 top 1/2 of known good monitor is fuzzy

Just set up new Dimension 2400 at my parent's place and noticed that the
display on their Proview 771 recycled from their previous system was fuzzy
at the top and clear on the bottom half of the screen. You can drag a window
to the top of the screen and it's fuzzy. Drag the same window to the bottom
of the screen and it's clear as a bell.

Had disconnected the monitor from the old classic Pentium system with 64 MB
of RAM where it seemed to be working fine. Downloaded new video drivers for
the Intel graphics card and that did not improve the display. Attempted to
Degauss the monitor, but it appears that the button is stuck or I'm doing
something wrong. Am taking another monitor over this weekend to ensure that
the monitor didn't go bad from one plug to another.

I've got a mishmash of 35 Dimensions, Poweredge Servers, Optiplex, and
Precision workstations that I support at work and I've not seen only half of
the screen go fuzzy before. Anybody heard of this sort of a scenario before?

Thanks,

Doug

Nope. That's a new one. I'm betting it's a monitor setting or problem. Got
an old 15" around somewhere you can swap to verify?

I suspect that you can answer the question by a closer look at the
problem. i.e. is the interface between the fuzzy part and the clear
part sharply defined or does it fade gradually over some small
distance from sharp to fuzzy? If the former, I'd bet it's a video
processor problem in the PC, and if the latter I'd vote for monitor.
I've seen monitors with regional focus and convergence problems. Some
higher-end monitors have controls that are specific for designated
areas of the screen. In all cases, the effects of their mis-settings
fade gradually over the transitions from one area to the other.

CRT monitors can't go away any too soon AFAIC. I *LOVE* my Dell and
Planar LCDs.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm over there tomorrow or the weekend with
another monitor to check out all the suggestions.

The Dimension 2400 doesn't have video ram. It uses Shared ram. Surely if
the ram on the system was bad, it would do more than be fuzzy.

I'd bet on the monitor.

Video RAM going bad????? Not likely.

It's possible that it's a bad stick of RAM wigging (or whigging ) out. But
given the age of the monitor, it's a more likely candidate.
