Hi I have a Dell 1710 monochrome laser printer, over 8 years old!

I have been using replacement (remanufactured) toner cartridges purchased
from various vendors on Amazon, if that makes a difference.

At the moment the pages are coming our with varying darkness in the characters.
In some locations on the page the characters are readable (but light), in other
spots the characters are unreadable or the area is almost blank. Inconsistent,
this is not a directional streak of light characters.

Yet the toner light on the 1710 is not on (yet). I don't know what triggers the
toner light on the 1710, perhaps there is still fluid toner left in the cartridge?

But now I am wondering if the drum is part of the problem. I don't think
I have printed 30,000 pages, and I have almost never had a paper crumpling
incident. The paper feed pickup mechanism seems to be working...

But what would be a sign that my drum should be replaced? Is there
and connection between drum performance and the resulting light
areas on my pages?

thanks for your help and advice

Could just be a bad cartridge. I believe the image drum is built into the toner cartridge.

I have an HP P1102w and also use 3rd-party toner cartridges. I have had my share of bad cartridges (damaged drum, faulty toner chip/SIM card, etc.)

Buying 3rd-party parts are cheap, but unfortunately, not-so-great quality comes with the territory.
