new external usb2 hard drive is too slow for video capture..

Just installed Studio 9 and a new 120Gig Western Digital USB2 external
HD which is dedicated to video capture.
I am using a Dell Demension 8200 that supports usb2 and Pinnacle
Studio 9
When I tried to capture some video for the first time I received a
Studio error message "Sorry cannot capture the data rate on drive F IS
LESS THAN THE REQUIRED RATE OF 4444 kbytes a second".

I find it hard to believe that a brand new external HD is incapable of
the required data rate speed.
Any suggestions at what the problem may be???

Its USB2 that is your problem. USB2 drives are never as fast as
Firewire.

I capture with external USB2 drives on desktop and Laptop. I agree, they
aren't as my 4 firewire array, but they are still more than fast enough for
video capture and editing. Are you sure your drives are recognized as USB2,
and not 1?
Try benchmarking them with Canopus' raptest:
http://www.canopus.com/US/products/free_utilities/pm_free_utilities.asp
I bet you have a configuration problem. My USB2 drives all benchmark around
8500-9500 kb/s, while my firewire drives at about 2x that. However, that
said, I can capture, edit etc.. w/o difficulty on my USB2 drives.

That must be the problem because I also capture on my USB2 external
drives all the time!!!! I have a maxtor 120 gb and a WD 120 gb. They
are always maxed out until I can remove the files. Capture on those
and encode and author and every damn thing on those. But I once had
them going at 1.0 instead of 2.0 and even copying a file was murder.
Make sure you are really at usb 2.0

Even though it "supports" USB-2, does it have the USB-2 card? If it has the
USB-1 card that's all it will handle.

Question is not wether USB2 (see the 2?) drives are as fast as
Firewire (did Studio say anything about Firewire?), but if they are
4444 KB/s (that's 4,3 MB/s) worth.

There will be no difference between a 2MB and an 8MB cache drive as
video capture goes. Since you're working with files significantly
larger than the cache, it will be exhausted within a fraction of a
second in either case.
