Hey everyone at Tom's. So I'm building a comp for the first time in 5 years, first time I'll be assembling totally on my own as well. After an assload of research and someone enlightening me to sandy bridge I think I'm almost set on my build.. Sort of.. This comp will be used mainly for games, don't play them 24/7 as I used to but when I do play I want the visuals to melt my mind, which means maxed settings. I'm also likly to do alot of map editing in SC2 if the editor is good (heard mixed things).

Basically it has come down to: to SLi or not to SLi.. Looking like a pair of 560 Ti vs the all powerful 590 GTX.

So heres the template (Yeah I read the Sticky 😱 )

Budget Range: Hoping to keep it near 1500 but I could go up.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming at high settings is the primary focus. Will do MS office, web surfing and maybe modeling but that is all secondary.

Parts Not Required: I need new everything, except a speaker system, and I think I can get a copy of Win7.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: No preference. (Plz read additional comment though)

Country of Origin: Canada

Parts Preferences: Nvida Graphics card, beyond that I'm open.

Overclocking: Never tried it but it would be a shame to waste the unlocked i5 from what I've read, so it will be happening at some point.

SLI or Crossfire: Not sure, which is the root of my problem.

Monitor Resolution: 1080x1920

Additional Comments:

Case: I want a good looking case, yeah I'll pay a bit extra for it. Really want a red/black scheme this time, with red LED's mainly, no silver. Obviously cooling is important too though.

Old Comp: My old comp sporting its A64 dual core and 7800 GT died, seems iTunes killed the gcard somehow. I don't plan to reuse any of its components. Wondering if I could sell the parts to subsidize my new comp (1G DDR ram, 550 PSU, MSI K8N MOBO, NZXT Nemesis Case, 17" samgsung monitor) Thinking I could get maybe 250 for parts?

Ordering: Canadadirect seems to have the best prices and big plus there is free shipping, but they on the other side of the country from me, worried about ship time. Plus I have never ordered online, are all the Canadian sites safe to order from or what?

Mouse and Keyboard: Havn't found ones I like yet, looking for red LED, and not a Razor mouse. Had two of their high end diamondbacks and on both the cable died and almost came right off in under a year. Razor blows unless they have pulled their *** together.

So yeah heres the lynchpin, the GPU situtaion. I can either go 590 GTX or 560 GTX Ti x2 in SLi.. I'm by no means set on the MOBO or exact GPU, honestly I have no idea which MOBO to pick, besides PCI-E x16 slots. The 590 GTX listed is one of the only 590s I could find for Canada, and is the best price I found.

Onboard audio on MOBO kind of a consideration as I wasn't planning a sound card, but I could get one if needed for sure.

So before tax the GTX 590 is over budget.. After tax they are both pretty far over, ******* worthless government running this province. :pfff:

What I'm really hoping for is feedback on these builds, anwsers to some of the random questions this post is riddled with, and most importantly, is two 560 Ti SLi or one 590 GTX the better option.. As well of course is all this stuff compatiable? Price reduction options would be nice too.. lol..

I've never ordered an item that is almost always 'Out of Stock' - I am referring to the 590, of course. I don't know how soon you would get it, but I would assume that you would want to put this together soon. For ease of ordering, I would just recommend getting the 560's and SLi them.

Also, if you're just going to be sticking with Starcraft 2, getting a 590 is total overkill. :) I am currently using a 460 768MB card and I'm running Starcraft 2 on max graphics at 1080p with no problems at all. This is just to give you a scope of how much is needed to run Starcraft 2 on max.
 
Thanks man but SC2 is not all I'll be running. See I havn't been able to play anything released in like the last year on my comp so I've lost track of the new titles lmao. I'll prob be playing the newest shooters of today and I'm hoping of a good many tomorrows too. So I figure its going to need to annihilate the games out now if it will stand strong for a few years.

Why the Cas 9 RAM over the Cas 8?

Just found someone else is going to throw a few dollars at this to help me, so I was thinking about adding an SSD drive as a cache and uping the drive to 2 TB. Or is there a better use for a few hundred extra? Better GPU's maybe..? Better mobo that offers 16/16? Better monitor?

Not to mention that the 560's are on Nvidia's newest and latest chip set an die. They o/c better than any card out on the market atm, and they run cool.

Get a single GTX 580. By the time you can't max game settings on it, you'll be able to buy it cheap as an SLI option. The card is dynamite and SLI GTX 580 is more powerful than an 590 anyways. If you want overkill and a budget, get the 580 now, and wait till you can afford it, or until it slows down in a year or so...then SLI it. Plus it saves you over $200 dollars on your build.

Only game(s) I can't choose max setting on a single GTX580 are Metro2033 and Witcher2 (needs ubersample off). Every other game: WoW, Tropico 3, Fallout 3 GOTY, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Crysis 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Far Cry 2, SC2...all running without a problem on my single EVGA GTX 580.

I was looking at the 590 GTX, not the the 580. I know from bench marks 560 Sli beats 580, but the 590 seems to hold its own against the pair of 560s...

I do like the idea of 580 now and uping later but..

A. I find when it comes time to up theres better stuff out and it seems like I'm putting money into a computer I'm going to turf in a few years anyway.

B. The cooling of the "Coolermaster Storm Enforcer Mid Tower ATX Case" worries me. It has no side fan meaning do direct air going to my GPU's and the fans it does have are smaller than some other cases.

The 560 Ti's I picked out have great coolers built right into them, I'd need to find a 580 GTX with the same..

580 GTX with what looks like awesome cooling, it costs roughly the same as two 560 Tis, but is more if anything.

According to the charts I've read there really isn't much of a difference between the 580 and the 560, not nearly enough to justify a double in price. The 590 on the other hand is in a tottaly different category, 175% the performance of the 580..
 

There's two sides to the SLI debate...well three actually. I'm like this. A $100 or less 750w psu runs dual 560's that cost around $450. A single 580 cost $500+ not to mention you don't want anything less than a solid 900w psu to push two of those cards in SLI.

When it come to over clocking...the 560's like that MSI card can be easily pushed to run on par with a stock 570 yet less heat, and uses less power. If a peep doesn't add a card within the next few months there's a good chance he never will. Something always comes along that's new, cool, and is a "must have" in the world of vid cards. Latest technology , etc... So I like to do dual vid cards right off the get go if it's in the budget. A pair of 560's along with that 2500K is going to last quite awhile and when it's time to move on...ebay them, craiglist, give em away...whatever and move on to whatever's new and cool atm.

i dont really care if hes canadian or not. i just know how good of a company/retailer newegg is and it is awfully sad that he cant take advantage of it.

On the newegg thing...they hose Canadians when it comes to shipping. Newegg is a great retailer as are a few others that come to mind. Superbiiz, Direct Canada, etc...all good.
 
Yeah, newegg has some good parts, but most of the prices are high compaired to other sites. Plus the two Why_me listed gives free shipping, which is a good 150 savings in itself.

Alright, so I need to order this *** soon, like I'm making the final decisions at this moment and about to order.

Two snags right now.. The case and the exact GPUS..

1. Is that case gonna have the cooling I need, it has no side fan?

It lists a 560 GTX twin frozr II then a 560 GTX ti Hawk Frozr III, and the difference between them is pretty massive.. its like a 19% increase, 5 frames more, from 27 to 32.

The hell is this Ti hawk thing all about.. The card we listed says its Ti but not hawk.. and is only frozr II? Is it the same card, with just a different cooling system (I've been assuming the frozr is the cooling thing) and the hawk version is just clocked higher at the factory or what?

Because if they are two different cards, the difference between them is huge and worth the extra 100 or so bucks.
 

Read that review I posted in that build. You dl MSI Afterburner and turn up those cards and you just saved yourself ...how much $$? But don't crank them up right off the get go for the fact you have no need to crank them up yet seeing how two of those cards eat up any game out there atm. If anything you might have to down clock them at first.
 
Yeah I did read that review, thats how I know the MSI 560 Ti is sick, I'm just wondering is that hawk one the same thing, just overclocked more out of the factory with a different cooler slapped on it?

And I realized I've made a mistake, I've been compairing factory overclocked 560 Ti cards to stock clock 570s, lol. Does that Ti bit on the end change the actual arcitechture of the card, or just mean its stock overclocked?

Because I could use that extra money to bump up to 570's and overclock them when needed if they have more potential.
 
I'm pretty much on the order button right now, really need to figure out this case and GPU thing, can someone solve this real quick:

A) 2X 560 GTX Ti Sli or 2X 570 GTX in Sli. Price isnt a huge factor for it, I'm more concerned about eventual overclocking and the power of the cards. I know the 560 Tis are awesome, but the 570s seem to have more cores and whatever and seem I could overclock them better in the future, seeing as most Tis are Oc'ed from the factory.

B) Case problem!

This one has clear siding which looks cool but has no side fan, which seems really important for GPU cooling if I'm going to OC..

Yeah I looked at that one too, stupid colorfans hypnotizing me and I want to element G but I know its just a novelty lol..

More importantly, 560 GTX Ti vs 570 GTX? Ti better pysically or is that just something they tack on when they factory OC it?
 

The "ti" version of the 560 have more cores than the non "ti's".

If yo go the 570 route, make sure to get a 850w psu. Look at the XFX ones on direct canada.
 
Pretty much decided on the element G, it comes with a 850W modular PSU and the combo is only 205.00 after shipping. Would be 300 If I went with HAF and a PSU. Plus a full tower is bigger than I wanted, I just want a mid.

Looking like It would be 300 more to upgrade to 570s, MSI ones with the frozr cooler on them.. There might be better 570s to be had.

Anyway, I have other things I need to do atm and don't want to rush the ordering process so I'm gonna put ordering off till tomorrow. I need to think about the 560 Tis vs the 570s a little more anyway.. Im just thinking with that monitors 120MHZ refresh the extra frames would actually help, especially if 3D gets cool down the road and I want to try that, high frame rate will be a necessity.
 
Well I ended up staying at the cottage way later than planned and didn't get to order last night, planning to order on my split from work in 3 hours. Decided on the 570s, for 200 bucks more they provide considerably better performance at only a little above stock speed as opposed to the OCed 560s, which means alot better OC potential down the road If I need.

90% Sure I'm going to the element G.. The Haf 932 is bigger than I want, plus the the G has two optional 60mm exhaust fans on the back specially for the GPUS, which is even more important if I get the frozrs as the reviews say the coolers blow the air down into the case not up towards the exhaust. Damn thing just doesn't have a clear side..

So heres the final build, let me know if you see any incompatible parts, possible better choices, price drops or anything.

I'd save 80$ by going with these over the MSI, but the MSI frozr cooling has great reviews, plus that other one is out of stock..

Oh and I'll need 2 60mm case fans for the back GPU cooling. Should only be like 20 bucks for both, any good suggestions? the rpms on them go from like 750 to 6000 on one of them, dont want loud but want good cooling..

So there it is, any last words!?!?? Need to order soon!

if your budget for teh case is lower just let me know but dont kill ur rig with a bad psu. u have a lot of stuff to power there and thats the last thing youd want to happen after spending all that money
