Question New GPU and CPU?

I built a PC a few years back with these listed specs:

Intel Core i5-6500 Skylake
Asus H170-PRO
Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4-2133 DC - 16GB
WD Blue 3.5" HDD - 1TB
Samsung 850 EVO SSD - 250GB
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING - 4GB GDDR5
Corsair Carbide 200R - Black
EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 - 550W PSU

However it only runs with around 90-100 fps on low settings in my main first person shooters (Apex Legends, CS:GO and Overwatch)
Which is a problem with my current 165hz monitor (1980x1080)

Naturally i thought about getting one of these as a new GPU:
GTX 1080 ti
RTX 2070, 2080 or 2080 ti
But have no clue which one would be optimal for my games and whether or not i would need to invest in a new cpu as well
And if the GPU will run into other problems with my previous build (Capacity? Bottlenecking? Enough power?)

I don't really have a set budget but around 1500$ preferably

Many thanks in advance!

I think the highest I would go with a GPU.....with that CPU .....is a GTX 1070.

If you want to go with any of the cards you mentioned I think you will need to upgrade the CPU.

You have enough power for a GTX 1070.....but make sure you have an available 8 pin plug for it.

There are also the Options of waiting a month for AMDs Ryzen 3000 which according to benchmarks so far would outperform Intels lineup at a much lower price and power draw. And the option of waiting for Nvidias "Super" refresh of Turing.

Thanks for that fast replies! But if i would go about buying a new CPU since i would like a better GPU which will last longer performance wise, what should i go for?

I personally would wait for July 7th when Ryzen 3000 releases and buy either 3700X, 3800X or 3900X.
The "Super" refresh from Nvidia is said to release at around the same time so that could be worth waiting for too.

if you have a low budget you can always update the BIOS on your motherboard and get an i7-7700K as a CPU upgrade. that CPU will keep you in gaming a few more years
The i7-6700K can sometimes be found for closer to $200, but the 7700K is still around $300 used. You can get an i5-9400F + Z390 mobo for $250.

I'm thinking about buying a new GPU (Probably a RTX 2070 as it is the one with the most bang for your buck. Correct me if i'm wrong)
But since my PC is quite old the CPU is of course somewhat out of date:

Intel Core i5-6500 Skylake
Asus H170-PRO
Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4-2133 DC - 16GB
WD Blue 3.5" HDD - 1TB
Samsung 850 EVO SSD - 250GB
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING - 4GB GDDR5
Corsair Carbide 200R - Black
EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 - 550W PSU

Because of that i was wondering which CPU (And motherboard if needed) would be most optimal for me
It's intended to play fps games like Apex, CS:GO and Overwatch. It should be noted that i use a 1080p 165hz monitor so a stable framerate around 165fps is the goal

Thanks in advance!

stick with 1 thread. don't need to keep asking
As the title states, i am looking for a new GPU for my old PC and since my CPU is quite old i naturally thought about getting a new one as well.
For the GPUs i am leaning towards the Nvidia RTX series (2070, 2080) but feel free to suggest others
But on the CPU front i am completely in the dark, but since the new Ryzen 3000 series just dropped i thought it would be a good time to upgrade.

Current PC specs:
Intel Core i5-6500 Skylake
Asus H170-PRO
Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4-2133 DC - 16GB
WD Blue 3.5" HDD - 1TB
Samsung 850 EVO SSD - 250GB
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING - 4GB GDDR5
Corsair Carbide 200R - Black
EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 - 550W PSU

I am only running on 1080p and 144hz and don't plan on upgrading in the near future.
Main use is for gaming (Apex, CS:GO, Overwatch and so on...)

So which GPU and CPU would be optimal?

Thanks in advance!
