Question New GPU stopped working after less than an hour?

My new 5080 won't turn on. It turned on at the beginning (30 minutes), played Clair Obscur normally, but after I tried playing MH Wilds, the display turned off while compiling shaders and it never turned back on even after rebooting it. GPU RGB is still on, but no display. I had turned off my iGPU before, so unfortunately, I couldn't see anything even from there.

I tried reseating the GPU as well as unplugging it, but neither worked. I took the power adaptor out, plugged my old 3090 in one of the cables, and it worked perfectly like it always did.

The only thing I can really think of is maybe that I daisy chained the adaptor? I don't think I had 3 PCIe cables, so I made do with what I could and daisy chained one of the cables that came with the PSU. I hope that didn't ruin anything permanently.

Any tips or ideas are appreciated. Thanks for your time!

I would clear cmos to regain igpu and reinstall nvidia drivers and report back :).
Ok, I regained iGPU and reinstalled drivers. Furthermore, I found out I did have another PCIe cable and added a 3rd.

I turned my PC on with the displayport in the 5080. It turned on naturally, however, nothing on the screen. I turned it off, turned it back on with the displayport on the motherboard, and it turned on naturally. Went to both Task and Device Manager to see if I'd see the 5080 and it did not show up. Only the iGPU showed up.

I don't have another PC to test this on. Should I RMA the GPU or is there something else possible to do?

Thanks again for your time!

Before RMA, try the HDMI port and if you have another monitor or tv try that as well. Also try safe mode. If any of this gives a boot display, reinstall drivers with the 5080 (vs. another video card).

I had tried using an HDMI cable for my 2nd monitor and it doesn't work on the 5080 and works on the 3090.

Tomorrow, I'll get the replacement cable from Corsair, and if that doesn't work, I'll just RMA it. Thanks for the help guys!

Does your video card have a bio switch? It will save you soooo much time.

Yeah, if it's under 30 days you can probably return to the store you purchased from.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my experience is typically that if a part is going to fail from being defective, they usually do so in the first 30 days or so. If not, then they will typically run a long time. Unfortunately in your case, gpus are expensive and in short supply. Though I'd say we're in better shape now than a couple of months ago.

I started a thread about the quirkiness about an iGPU and dGPU setup. I have an ASUS TUF RTX 5080 and a 9800X3D setup. If I don't get the proper handshake, I lose all video from the 5080. It requires a CMOS reset. I first have to remove the 5080. But when it works I have no issues.

Did you check for proper seating of the 12pin power connector?

Here's what I would suggest:

1) Power off/Flip switch on back of PSU
2) Drain residual power
3) Remove 5080
4) Clear CMOS
5) Setup CMOS and force it to iGPU
6) Power off
7) Drain power
8) Insert 5080
9) Plug HDMI cable into iGPU. It will still detect the 5080.
