Hi,

So i have an XFX 7970 and i am wondering wither i get a 970 or not. I live in Australia so my general temperatures are pretty high in general, but my GPU keeps hitting 80-90c mid games. I only play games in either 1920x1080 or 1600x900 on high or ultra(extreme) setting. The FPS is good (considering its age (30-60 FPS).

My question is, is it worth me buying a GTX 970 because i feel that my GPU at the moment is not powerful enough and is running way to hot + its really loud when it gets to those temperatures.

also if you recommend me getting a 970, which one do think i should get.

( I am running 2 samsung s22c350 and look to upgrade soon (single 2k monitor) ( currently one straight hdmi and one dvi to hdmi conversion connection) i have an fx 3850, corsair h80, 2 SSD'S and 1 HHD with a 700 PSU).

Solution
In theory, you have a good GPU, so there`s not a lot of reasons to upgrade.
But with that said, I did sell my R9 280x Matrix in order to get a GTX 970 - so for me it was worth it.

Regarding which one to get - the Gigabyte G1 Gaming is the most powerfull of the lot. Now the Strix or the MSI might run a bit cooler, but I don`t expect the temp difference to be more than 1-2 degrees, si I`m not sure the porformance loss is worth it.

Sounds to me like your card is fine but the temp issue will always be a problem, regardless of which one you opt for next. Maybe not to the same degree but Australia is bloody hot.

My suggestion would be to stick it out for a an even more advanced card due out soonish. Perhaps mid winter for you mid summer here.

In the meantime, this will solve your problem right now, 100%. What you need to do is couple this bit of kit with a closed look watercooling system like the Corsair h60 or h80. it works WONDERS for temps and can be removed and adapted onto your new card when it comes out.

upgrading to a gtx 970 makes a little to no sense to me as its only one tier above your current card ..

i suggest you either save up enough money for a dual gtx 970 setup or just get a single gtx 980 or a if you can get a 7990 which is a dual gpu card

Just smashing a top end card in is a fairly expensive and primitive "solution" here. It's not like he is running an ancient card or anything.

You should really stick it out as there are great cards on the horizon that run a lot cooler from both AMD and Nvidia. For now work on a cooling solution of your current card. It will save you immense amounts of money.
