New Gtx 1050ti installed, working then after updating driver. Bios loads but nothing after, just blank screen?

Hey folks here’s my setup...
ASUS z97-p mobo
2 x 8gb ram crucial
i5 4690k
Couple of hard drives
42” 1080p television as a monitor
(Using a HDMI connection)

New addition: Gigabyte wind force Gtx 1050ti.

So yesterday I plugged in the gfx card and it worked right away. Obviously due to lack of drivers the picture was awful.
I set about downloading the drivers from the gigabyte support pages and these really improved the picture but wasn’t perfect despite tweaking the settings etc.
I noticed NVIDIAs website was offering a more recent driver and decided to download that one instead hopefully improving picture settings and quality.
Towards the end of the installation at some point (I was cooking food so dunno when) the screen went black and my TV notified me there was no signal.

I then waited for about 25 mins to see if it would come back on but nothing happened.
I turned it off and on and the BIOS screen loads then shows the next ASUS page but the spiral dot load thing does one revolution and everything blanks out again.

This morning I tried a CMOS battery reset and entered the BIOS to change the GPU setting and made the gfx card primary.

Still the same result.
Any ideas folks?

Can you enter safemode?

If you can, boot with network capabilities to download displaydriver uninstaller, ddu for short. Or put it on usb from another pc. Run it and wipe nvidia drivers. Restart and try again.

Hopefully you can get to safemode with the way things are.

I’m not sure if I have a win10 usb anymore but will look for one.
Could I remove the gpu, plug mobo gfx into my television and change bios to boot mobo gfx?

Then enter safe mode and delete drivers with DDU?

this could be a conflict with your internal graphics as well. have you tried chaning the default settings on your BIOS in the graphics config. set it to PCIE. and disable "shared display memory" or something along those lines. if you do have fast boot enabled or just disable it entirely (this setting will usually fix newly isntalled hardware problems). please shutdown after your BIOS settings are saved. then boot it. see if it works.

make sure your display cables are ONLY attached to your GPU.

Igpu should work try boot normally without 1050. I'm not sure if you can install programs in safemode.

So I changed the bios back to the cpu gfx and there was no other settings enabled such as ones mentioned earlier.

Switched the TV from the gfx HDMI slot to the mobo/cpu - VGA/pc spot and restarted.

Same result happens, ASUS bios screen loads onto the next ASUS loading screen and then it cuts off to a black one.

This time however the screen isn’t reporting a lack of signal, it’s just a black screen.

Also using the VGA settings the screen borders are all in place, with the GFX card the edges are all cut off the screen and I can’t see them :/

Hey I’ve managed to remove the gfx card, install DDU and clean the drivers.
When I plug it all back in can anyone give me an idea of what drivers are best?

The gigabyte website that I installed first gave me an older nvidia driver, 384.76

The one that came from nvidias website was 388.71, this crashed my card originally.

The obvious answer is the earlier version but if there is a better one anyone has used personally or knows works the best then your advice is very much appreciated.

Im running the very latest drivers from Nvidia.

Not sure what happened with you, possibly driver conflict between Gigabyte's version and Nvidia.

Possibly antiviris or Win10 prevented succesful driver install. Best to run driver install as administrator.

Check display Hz is set properly after installing. Often with Tvs Hz can be set much lower then optimum, usually 29/30Hz.

Still unsolved this problem unfortunately but there are some things I noticed but can’t explain.

So I went through the process of removing my gfx card, switching back to cpu gfx on the vga cable and removing both nvidia and intel drivers using DDU via safe mode.
Then I put the gfx card back in and connected the card to TV via HDMI.

I tried to install each driver, two times over (4x in total).

Each time the Nvidia installer would load but about halfway through installation the screen blacks out but the pc stays on.

I left it in this state for over half an hour each time hoping the screen would come back at the end of installation. I tried key presses such as enter, esc and ctrl+alt+del to see it it would bring the screen back but nothing would happen.

After performing a hard shut down and restarting. The original problem occurs where the bios menu loads but nothing after it loads.

Any ideas?

Oh I also made sure the bios was loading g the right graphics unit each time too, cpu gfx or the gfx card so it’s not that.

I’m always on an admin acct as I’m the only user of the pc.
I know my tv will display at 60hz which is default for the gfx settings I’m pretty sure?

Oc'd versions of 1050ti requires 6pin power. If yours is an oc model, do you have it connected?

Hz shouldn't be the problem because TV's can display 30hz. Once drivers are installed and running always check hz after installing. Often gpus wont set to highest possible, probably safety feature.

My psu isa 600w evga modular and has pice cables that I’ve used for it.
They are 6pin but have an extra 2 pins on the cable that are separate.
I’ve plugged the 6pin one in and left the 2 extra pins to dangle by the side.

I’ve had these plugged into the gfx card all the one so don’t think it’s a prob with that unless I’m using the wrong cable but it all looks fine to me idk

I’ve just about given up with this now...

I’ve dome this too many times now and tested certain variables and nothing has worked...

On the first try the installer completed using the older nvidia driver from gigabyte website, I was able to change display settings and watch things.
I found the newer driver on nvidias and the screen blacked out after the installer crashed updating with the newer driver.

Then after seeking advice on here I removed the gfx card and switched back to VGA/CPU graphics, installed DDU, run in safe mode and tried again.

This time I tried installing the older driver and it blacked out during installation.

The next time I tried installing the newer driver and it almost completed but crashed again.

The final time I booted into safe mode and installed the newer driver which then completed successfully but as soon as I rebooted out of safe mode it crashed again after the bios screen.

Why is it that I can strip all nvidia drivers and still load up the pc using the gpu?

It worked the first time even after installing the older driver which did improve the picture but then when the new driver was installed, it all went tits up?

Then even trying just the older driver again it wouldn’t work?

Another thing I noticed is that when both mobo/vga and gpu/hdmi are connected I can switch to both BIOS and it loads.
However once I try install a driver and it crashes, if I try switch from HMDI to VGA then it won’t work and both channels crash.

Once drivers are installed the gpu initialises, the card starts operating at clock speeds and adjusts resolutions and hz frequencies.

Could be antivirus or Windows preventing drivers be installed.

I suggest typing msconfig in Windows task bar search. In boot options select diagnostic start which only the necessary startup items are loaded. See what happens then when trying to install drivers.

Is user account control left to default settings?

What antivirus are you running? Window's own shouldn't cause problems, but if running another different 3rd party, try turning it off before installing.


If still no go, the gpu might be faulty. Trying in another pc or returning might be the last option

I tried to install the driver whilst in safe mode if that’s what you mean by diagnostic? The install completed but after restarting it black screened, that was my last attempt.

I don’t use an antivirus at the moment, just windows defender.

My user account is just the default user with admin privileges but I will have a closer look and set it to default and try again.

So the order I do things...
1) Enter safe mode with networking.
2) Use DDU to clear nvidia drivers.
3) Download newest drivers whilst using VGA/mobo gfx.
4) Shut down & insert 1050ti into pc.
5) Switch tv connection to HDMI/gfx.
6) Start pc into safe mode & install drivers.
7) Restart and hope for the best?

Diagnostic startup is different to safemode. Typing msconfig in search bar, selecting boot and there are boot options to choose from.

I dont think diagnostics will help.

Think its time to try the gpu in another pc or rma it tbh.

Installing display drivers in safe mode is generally inadvisable. They are better installed in normal mode. After using DDU and physically installing the card you should be able to boot into normal Windows with the default VGA (low resolution) drivers. I would start your procedure until the end of step 5. Disable anything that could interfere with installations like antimalware software or UAC and try using NVIDIA update to fetch the drivers for you. Only install the display driver, leave everything else.

If possible, try hooking up a 60Hz display or rather normal monitor. This would help eliminate the TV output range as the issue.

Good point jr9, it just might have been the tv all along.

Generally a tv should work. If theres a chance the video format isn't being recognised, might be an idea to see if theres an option in the Tv to change or rename the hdmi input in use to Pc or an option to change colour format of that hdmi channel to rgb full.
