Hell o, i have a HP h8-1214 PC with a 500 watt psu and a GTX 550 video card. I bought the GTX 960 but when i install it then start my pc i get a blue screen i tried to re seat it but still dosent work, i updated my bios for my motherboard (but its a version from 2012 i couldnt find anything newer) i uninstalled the GTX 550 drivers befor putting the GTX 960 in but nothing works please help 🙁

Go in and check sure all your PC wires are in their places and that they everything is safe and applied.

Wires look and feel fine.

It might be your PC are sure there is not anything that might cause your gpu to not be registered. And also have you installed the GTX 960 drivers?

I unistalled the old video card 550 GTX driver then i installed the new card 960GTX went straght to blue screen so i wasnt able to install the new drivers for the 960GTX. PC wise maybe the card would be un combadable with my mother board but i dont know why it wouldnt since the 550 GTX works with no problems and i think the 550GTX is 3.0 pcie too.

there proprietary bios may not allow certain cards to be used on there boards and they may not give you a udated bios that will support cards that's not inside there specs of there model

my disclaimer

ome models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

but lest hopr its not your issue

good luck

one more thing I just looked at at hp is that the card that came on it was ' •Total power consumption 25 W maximum ''

hp will limit the pci-e slot power to what they want so if they got the slot limited to say 45 w and you add a card that requires the full 75w pci-e power it will fail due to is not getting it full power from the slot

upgrading a prebuilt is all your own risk

edit
well looking at the tdp of the cards the 550 is 116w the 960 is 120-130 so its close ??

you know eaven custom boards with older chipsets like z68 boards these cards don't work as well so its just maybe one of them things ?

Yeah a prebuilt is a pretty risky process

I think you hit the nail on the head unforunatly 🙁 I dont sopose there is a way to change the pcie power? due to them locking the bios this is the card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487093&ignorebbr=1

Unfortunately I don't think so your just stuck my friend.
