So I finally saved up 250$ for a GPU. I have 2 options at the moment: A brand new GTX 960 or a Used GTX 970. A lot of my friends are suggesting the latter and I can understand why.

What I want to know from you guys is the disadvantages of buying a used GPU. Thanks in advance.

That's an absolute no-brainer, the 970 is the way to go, it's around 60% faster than the 960. But as Techy said, you really shouldn't be considering either card as for $250 you can get a 1060 which put outs GTX 980 performance with an additional 2GB of memory, all for around the same power consumption as a 960.

I have no problem with used graphics cards so long as you have some sort of a warranty and the price is right.
On ebay, a used EVGA GTX970 sells for <$200.

I specify EVGA because if the seller registered the card, the warranty can be transferred to you.
Buy from a individual seller who is upgrading and not from a retailer who needs to make a profit.
Check for decent reputation and pay with paypal.
In the event of a dispute, evga sides with the buyer.

I'm from Canada so even a used GTX 1060 costs 350$ here.
