I have a 40GB hard drive and a 230 GB hard drive. Once I have installed the new one my pc has slowed down. I have both hard drives on the same cable. Could this be the problem?

Shouldn't be a problem and shouldn't slow it down. It does depend on
what speed (RPM) your haddrive is and if you have it configured in RAID.
If you do not have it configured in RAID, you should check your
motherboard manual to see if this is possible. Here is a neat little
website about RAID:

The only way Windows could be slower is if one of the drives is UDMA66
and the other is ATA100\133.
