I bought a WD Green 4tb HDD. It is recognized in BIOS and disk management, but when i go to initialize it, it gives me a "data error cyclic redundancy check" error message. I've tried choosing MBR and GPT; get the same error for both. I've tried multiple cables and connections and it doesn't have a drive letter yet, so I can't run a chkdsk. The drive is currently in an external enclosure, but I've tried it internally as well. Any ideas?

OS:windows 7 64bit (will be eventually plugged into a linux server 32bit)

it's never been initialized... there is no drive letter to run a chkdsk on...

What happenswhen you connect the drive to another computer or another OS does the same thing happen.
Try connecting to a Linux OS.
I would strongly recommended u try the Linux option, preferably Ubuntu u dont even have to install it just run it off the live CD/USB and plug in ur harddirve.

the drive didn't show up in ubuntu or gparted... only in windows and there it gives me an error message when initializing

Okay, downloaded the WD Universal Firmware Updater for Windows; http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/firmware.asp?id=wdfGeneric&os=win
Follow their instructions, gd luck mate cause i am running out of ideas. 😀😀
